High School Graduation Traditions
High school graduation is a momentous occasion, and should be marked with some kind of celebration
or recognition of your student, as well as yourself! You might remember your own graduation, or
perhaps you’ve attended another student’s graduation recently, so you’ll no doubt remember that there
are many details to attend to.
One of the first things you should do is to order a diploma and a diploma cover. I think it’s very
important to invest in a diploma. There may come a time in the future when your child is asked to show
their high school diploma, and you’ll want them to be able to unhesitatingly say ‘yes, here it is.’ This will
also help them remember the occasion when you handed them their diploma, which you want them to
Many christian home school students choose to wear a cap and gown at their graduation, although
others choose not to. If your student wants a cap and gown, don’t forget the tassel. Some students
even add ‘bling’ to their outfit. This may include honor medallions, honor cords and class rings. When
our oldest son attended his college graduation, he wore different cords for different majors, because he
graduated with multiple majors.
The cap and gown are generally reusable by other members of your family. However, if you graduate
with a group, often they will require a certain color cap and gown, in which case you probably won’t be
able to reuse a sibling’s. The tassel that comes on the cap is often considered a keepsake. Sometimes
people put it on the rear view mirror of their car, or save it in their hope chest or something.
As you plan the reception (if you have one), it’s common to have food, but it’s also just fine to have
dessert or cake. I had cake for each of my boys, because they graduated at the same time. You might
choose to have either a lunch or a buffet. You can choose a picnic, or something formal. One tip is to
choose a graduation color or a party theme early on, so you can keep a look out for the things you need
in the right colors. Most people give gift cards or gifts of money to graduates rather than wrapped
boxes of gifts, so it’s nice to have a basket for the gift cards as well.
There are a million right ways to do a graduation. You can be very casual or very elegant, depending on
your budget, your wishes, and the wishes of your children. It’s your show, so make it something you and
your student will enjoy and remember forever.
