The Writing Center Lab—Macklin Tower Building Room 20—is available for writing term
papers, etc.
LAB HOURS
Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Saturday 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Sunday 8:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
o Labs open on the first day of classes for the semester and close on the last day of scheduled
finals.
o Labs are closed on all College holidays.
o Changes to regularly scheduled lab hours will be posted on the doors of each lab as well as at
each lab office.
TO USE THE LABS:
To use the labs, you must have a current Montgomery College ID.
o Bring your own storage media: a 3.5-inch 1.44mb diskette or a USB flash drive to save your
work. We do not provide them.
o Choose any available computer that is not marked for special use.
o Turn on the computer. Allow the computer to start up fully and completely from the hard-drive – do not
insert a diskette until the PC has completely started. If the computer is on, shut it down first and then
restart it – this resets the machine and provides protection against viruses.
o It is not necessary to enter a login name or password. The computers are configured to automatically
log you on to the network.
o When you have finished working:
Exit your application(s) fully.
Remove any diskettes or USB flash drives.
Click on , Shut Down, then click on OK in the pop-up box, “Shut Down
Windows”
LAB REGULATIONS:
Below are some important regulations to ensure consideration for all users and provide for the
safety, convenience, and security of all. Persons who fail to comply with lab regulations will be
challenged.
1. Workstations are for use only by currently registered students and only for work required
by Montgomery College courses.
o Personal use of the lab for game-playing, chatting and web-surfing is prohibited.
o Use of e-mail and/or chat for any purpose other than course requirements is prohibited.
2. Food, beverages, and chewing gum are not permitted in the labs or computer-equipped
classrooms.
3. Cell phone usage is not permitted in the lab.
4. You must adhere to all aspects of the College’s Student Code of Conduct and the College’s
Acceptable Use of Information Technology. The complete Acceptable Use policy can be

o Do not download, install or run any unauthorized software.
o Do not attempt to write to or alter the hard-drive or network servers in any way.
o Do not connect personal laptops or other electronic devices to the network or electrical
connections.
o You may not copy software from the workstations or servers.
5. Printing is limited to documents that you have created and no more than 10 pages in
length. You may print two copies per document, one for you and one for your instructor.
o If you need more, photocopy machines are available at various locations around campus.
o For printing documents larger than 10 pages, required for a term paper, go to lab offices
CS019 or HU307 to obtain prior approval from InTechRV staff.
o Printing tutorials, internet advertisements, html documents, personal materials or other non-
class related documents is not permitted.
6. Double sided printing is the standard: In order to preserve resources, the printers in the
computer labs are configured to print on both sides of a page.
7. Do not change the default paper size or printer tray from the print dialog box in any application.
Special forms, envelopes, etc. cannot be used in lab or classroom printers.
8. Labs close promptly at the posted hours.
o Computer-equipped classrooms close when the instructor leaves.
o Be sure you have saved your work, completed any printing, and shutdown PC by closing time.
9. Instructional Technology - Rockville staff and student aides are not permitted to tutor
students. For help with course work, contact your instructor or tutor(s).
10. In order to provide service as equitably as possible, access to the labs is on a first-come, first-
served basis. If a waiting line forms, a 1-hour time limit on lab use may be imposed.
11. Shoes must be worn at all times.
Do not leave any valuables unattended. If you leave valuable items in
classrooms and labs, they will be turned in to MC Security.
