                       What is sea grass?
    There are two types of sea grass in the
    Baltic Sea.
    Eel grass (zostera marina) and
    dwarf eel grass (zostera noltii).
    Different types exist in other parts of
    Europe and on other continents.

Sea grass – a problem on beaches
    Sea grass is washed
    ashore with other
    flotsam and jetsam.
    It decomposes and
    gives off carbon
    dioxide,thus
    contributing to the
    greenhouse effect.

Sea grass – a problem on beaches
    The bathing beaches have to be cleaned by
    the authorities along the coast, since tourists
    expect them to be clean and attractive.
    This costs money for
      – the staff and cleaning equipment
      – transport and
      – landfill disposal

 Up to now, many of
 Europe’s beaches have been
 cleaned in the way shown
 here.
 The result is
  – that sand is removed
    together with the sea
    grass
  – This leads to a loss of
    sand and high transport
    costs.

               The sea grass problem
    Together with Kässbohrer-
    Werke, the Klützer
    Winkel Authority has
    developed a modified
    beach cleaning device that
    can pick up the flotsam
    and jetsam better
    The result is
     – that the most of the
       sand is separated from
       the flotsam and jetsam
     – the sea grass is pre-
       cleaned.

       The idea behind the project
    The recycling of sea grass is not new
    Fishermen along the Baltic Sea coast have
    long used sea grass in building their houses
    In some parts of Denmark the roofs of
    houses have been covered with sea grass
    Sea grass is also used as a filling material
    for mattresses.

                       Aims of the project
    The aim of our project is :
      – to reduce the disposal costs for local authorities
      – Existing resources are to be recycled in an
        environmentally acceptable way
      – This provides an opportunity to set up regional
        cycles and create additional jobs

                       Financing
    Putting the project into practice is costly
    However, the European Commission has
    given the partners in the project financial
    support from its LIFE Environment
    Programme. The grant it has provided is
    worth € 1.8 million. The main aim of the
    project is to develop the technology to
    manufacture products made of sea grass.

    The Danish partners in the project are
    making changes to an existing mat
    production plant so that it can be used to
    produce sea grass insulating mats of up to
    20 cm.
    They hope to produce mats at this plant in
    the course of 2002
    Their aim then is to have the mats licensed
    as a building material

                       Loose fill insulation
    Some 60 kg per cubic metre are injected
    A heat value of 0.042 can be obtained
    A big advantage of sea grass is that it is
    very non-inflammable
      – Therefore no additives are needed as fire
        retardants
    Moreover, sea grass has excellent diffusion
    properties and a good heat capacity value

     Sea grass is an environmentally friendly
     alternative for insulating purposes
