The position of Play Worker will assist the Family services manager in the management and development of the play area
and children’s facilities at HMP Woodhill. The post holder will work amongst a team of Staff and volunteers who contribute
to the children’s services work at the prison and to a wider group of Children’s services workers who contribute to the
work and development of children’s services in the overall organisation.

Job purpose

Working as one of the children’s services team, this role is to assist in the organising of a daily play facility for children
visiting HMP Woodhill. You will assist in ensuring that the play facilities operate at an excellent standard in its provision of
activities and safeguarding of children at all times, ensuring that activities are suited to the range of children visiting
the prison.

1.   To promote a positive visiting experience through the use of play for children visiting a family member serving a
     custodial sentence at HMP Woodhill.

2. To work directly with the children attending the visits hall.

3. To initiate and offer a programme of activities, to include arts and crafts, games and quiet activities and encourage
   imaginative play.

4. To ensure that all activities cater for the various age and culture of children visiting the play area in accordance with
   the equal opportunities policy.

5. To promote a relaxed atmosphere in which children may feel confident and develop respect and consideration for
   each other.

6. To work with the Visitor Centre Manager to purchase and maintain appropriate play and craft equipment.

9. To report all incidents and any equipment defects to the Visitors Centre Manager.

10. To liaise with the prison visits staff (and others as appropriate) to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the play

12. To work in accordance with Prison Advice and Care Trust policy and practice guidelines.

13. To attend relevant security training and adhere to prison guidelines and regulations at all times.

   14. To work with the Visitor Centre Manager and prison staff to regular review all health and safety aspects of the play

   15. To adhere to national child protection policies.

   16. To contribute to the work of Prison Advice and Care Trust and to play a full and active role as a member of the larger
       staff team.

   17. To attend regular meetings and supervision sessions.

   18. To undertake any other duties as required commensurate with the post and the development of the project.

QUALIFICATIONS                    NNEB, or NVQ level 2 in childcare or equivalent

                                    An awareness of legislation surrounding early years practice and safeguarding children

                                    Knowledge of anti-discriminatory practices in play work or childcare

                                    At least one years experience of play work with children

                                    Well developed listening, written and verbal communication skills.

                                    Demonstrate the ability to contribute to planning and development of play work

                                    Ability to relate with warmth and sensitively to people from a diverse range of backgrounds,
                                     including children, prisoners, ex-prisoners, volunteers, prison officers, colleagues, and others.

                                    Able to work alone as well as part of a team.

     Terms and Conditions

     Length of contract:             fixed term until 31st march 2013 further extension is subject to securing further funding

     Salary:                         £3,857 – £4,285

     Normal place of work:           HMP Woodhill

     Pension:                        6% Employer Contribution. No minimum employee contribution required.

     Annual Leave:                   8.5 days + 2.5 Bank/public Holidays

     Hours of work                   10 hours (based on a rolling rota of 2.5 hrs a day inc 1-2 weekends out of every third weekend)

     This post is subject to a 6 month probationary period, two satisfactory references from previous employers, an Enhanced
     Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure, and Prison Security Check (National Police Computer Record).
