The end of the school year is in our sights, but we still have our biggest event of the year coming up Saturday,
May 19th……Spring Fling 2012! It is sure to be a fun day for all with so many things to do! We will have
TWO bounce houses, a food tent with hamburgers, cheeseburgers and hot dogs, the ever famous Dunk Tank
where kids can dunk their principals, a Tolland Fire Truck and S.W.A.T. vehicle to explore, popcorn, cotton
candy, pretzels, frozen fruit bars, games, crafts, face painting, cupcake decorating, and our book nook where
you can stock up on summer reading for you and the kids! There is still time to decorate a cake for our Cake
Master competition – we have a Junior and Adult category (nothing too professional – just have fun with it!).
The Sweet Shop always has lots of goodies for sale, and our room parents have been busy assembling
classroom baskets for our raffle tables – there is always a great assortment of themed baskets – don’t miss it!
We even have some extra special raffle items this year including: a Patriots football signed by offensive tackle,
Nate Solder, an autographed photo of Red Sox second baseman, Dustin Pedroia; and a 16” Hot Wheels Kids
Bike! Join us for some fun!! See you there!
WHAT’S COMING UP…
Spring Fling – May 19th, 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, TIS

Sweet Shop Donations Needed: If you enjoying baking please consider making something for our Sweet Shop
bake sale at the Spring Fling! With the Spring Fling only a week away we urgently need baked goods. Cakes,
cookies, brownies, candies – whatever your specialty! Please contact Lori Ferguson if you can donate to the Sweet
Cake Master Raffle (Adult & Junior Entries): Do you love baking cakes? We are looking for entrants into our
Cake Master table for the Spring Fling. We will have both an Adult Section and a Junior Section. Prizes will be
awarded to the cakes that get the most votes! Cakes will be raffled off at the end of the day to some lucky winners!
If you would like to enter a cake please contact Nicole Canavanthecanavans@canavancentral.com or (860) 454-
7213. This was a really fun event last year with many raffle tickets purchased in hopes of winning a cake to take
home. Help us make it just as successful as last year!
Cupcake Decorating: The cupcake decorating table at the Spring Fling is always a fun (and messy!) activity for the
kids! We need donations to help them decorate those cupcakes! We have the cupcakes, but if you can donate

those end of the school year gifts (teachers, coaches, bus drivers, etc.), A gift card makes the perfect gift. And, with
one stop shopping, it can’t get any easier than ordering all your gift cards through the PTO scrips order. The orders
are due on Wednesday, May 30th. The pickup date will be June 11th in the Birch Grove lobby.
We still accept paper orders as usual along with your check for payment. But, you may also complete your gift card
order online as well. Go to shopwithscrip.com to register and use our TEPTO enrollment code (9C988FA515396)

WHAT JUST HAPPENED…
The TIS Change War Results Are In! Tolland Intermediate started a change war in April. Students brought in their
spare change and classes competed to see who could bring in the most. All together the kids brought in $2,800!!!!
The top 3 classes to bring in the change were Mrs. Ernest's class, Mrs. Kogut’s class and Mrs. Shearer’s class.
This will be going directly to the new TIS playscape!
We must thank Tonya Lyons and Christine Evans and other Student Council parent volunteers for organizing the
change war. Also a Big Thank You to Rockville Bank for allowing our advisors to use their change counting
machines. Great Job Kids!!!!
Sneaker Recycling—Nike Reuse A Shoe
We collected 400 pairs of shoes! TEPTO has teamed up with NIKE to participate in their Reuse-a-Shoe program. Go
to: nikereuseashoe.com to see a great video about what happens to the sneakers when they get recycled. We
saved A LOT of sneakers from the landfill! Now they will be turned into running tracks and tennis courts! Thanks
to everyone who dropped off your old sneakers!
Somers Golf Center/Sonny's Place
The weather wasn’t cooperating so we had to cancel the mini-golf fundraiser. Please look for the new date to be
rescheduled for the near future.
Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week
Last week was Teacher and Staff Appreciation week. The Tolland Elementary PTO would like to send an enormous
THANK YOU to all the teachers and staff in our schools. Every day we see examples of them going above and
beyond the call of duty. Our children are very fortunate that they are being schooled under such a dedicated team.
The TIS Student Council greeted the teachers on Monday morning with Bright Sidewalk Messages that read “TIS
STAFF ROCKS” and “The Best Staff, Hands Down”, etc. Check out The Tolland Elementary Facebook page to see
these fun messages.
To show our appreciation, the PTO hosted a luncheon at the end of this week. The teachers certainly enjoyed their
hearty salads and platters of desserts. Thank you to everyone who donated to make this luncheon such a success.
Many Tolland Businesses have also donated some lovely gifts and prizes for our teachers and staff, which were
awarded by a complimentary lottery. We would like to send out a HUGE Thank YOU to all the business who
