ISU Letter to Business Owners 87E445080C2EB by ysiClB

Dear Main Street Culture District Business Owner:

Over the past few years, the Department of Apparel, Events, and Hospitality Management at Iowa State
University has had the privilege of collaborating with our local community and of extending our
undergraduate education from the classroom to the Main Street Culture District. In our Brand
Management and Promotions course, we have seen great success in the Main Street Display Window
Project in which student teams collaborate with business owners to create display windows that exhibit
holiday themes as well as reflect the store brand concepts and values. Therefore, I would like to sincerely
invite you to participate in this year’s Main Street Display Window Project.

In the Main Street Display Window Project, each student team from the Brand Management and
Promotions course will work with a participating business owner. In addition to putting together a
window display themed for the holiday season, the student teams will consult with the business owners in
order to meet their branding and promotion needs. Each student team will have a $100 budget from the
course fee for materials needed for this project, although, as business participants, you are welcome to
provide the teams with products or stationary for the display. This year, the student teams will start
working with business owners on October 26th, and the display windows will be ready by Wednesday,
November 14th, for the Main Street holiday season kick-off on Friday, November 16th. This project is a
great opportunity to bring in fresh ideas from the students to your business and to attract more store traffic
through the students’ window designs. In addition, with the student team’s efforts, you will be able to
more efficiently and more effectively prepare for the busy holiday season.

From our experiences of the past few years, we have seen our students take their responsibilities very
seriously and greatly respect both the importance of the businesses and experience of the owners. They
are excited for the opportunity to put their knowledge into practice and to collaborate with our local
businesses. If you are interested in this project, I earnestly ask you to share your precious experience and
opinions with the students, as they are learning from this project and, perhaps more importantly, from you.
Thanks to the mentoring they provide, business participants are often pleasantly surprised by the students’
creativity and the quality of work they deliver.

Thank you for considering participating in this project for the benefit of the students and of our
community. You will be contacted by Tom Drenthe, Executive Director of Main Street Culture District,
to confirm your interest in this project. Please provide your contact information to Tom if he does not yet
have it. For further information regarding the Brand Management and Promotions course and course
projects, please contact me.
