Groundbreaking for Multi-Use Rugby Complex
Sunday, August 2
The Village of Cottage Grove and the Wisconsin Rugby Club Sports Complex Board of
Directors will celebrate the groundbreaking of the 38-acre multi-use rugby and
community sports development located at Firemen’s Park in Cottage Grove on Sunday,
August 2, starting at 3 pm. The public and news media are invited.
Following the ceremony, the celebration will continue at the 1855 Bar and Restaurant on
Main St. of Cottage Grove, located two blocks from the field.
The new sports complex will be used for high school, college and adult rugby, including
the WRC, the Wisconsin Women’s Rugby Club and the Madison Minotaurs. In the
spirit of a multi-use facility, Monona Grove high school soccer, Village of Cottage Grove
Parks and Recreation programs and other sports will be played on the five fields.
The grass seeding has already begun; the WRC hopes to begin playing there in August
2010 for its annual Stuart Daily Memorial 10-a-side rugby tournament being held this
year at the Crossroads in Cottage Grove on Saturday, August 8.
The WRC, the state’s oldest rugby club founded in 1962, qualifies perennially for
Midwest and national championships – taking 3rd in 2008, 4th in 1997 and winning the
national championship in 1998. The Wisconsin Women’s team, founded in 1975, most
recently captured the 2009 Lakefront 7’s Tournament championship in Milwaukee. The
UW-Madison men’s team qualified for the collegiate national championship in 2009,
