  Central Michigan University Off-Campus Programs and Raven Hill Discovery Center will partner to offer
  credit options for the Center’s 2007-08 Workshop Series. Each session offers three semester hours through
  Central Michigan University. Credit is accepted by most school districts for use toward professional certificate
  renewal and may also be used to comply with the School Administrator continuing education requirement. If
  you are working on a degree program, please consult with your advisor or certification office to determine if the
  course will apply to your program. The CMU Connections Series will bring science, history & art teachers
  together to build links that connect curriculum for students in the areas of glass, clay, fiber, metal, wood and
  stone.
          CMU EDU 508: Science, History and Art Connections Workshops 2007-08
      All courses have been submitted & are pending approval by Central Michigan University
         Dates                                                Description
   Fall Semester 2007 ~ Times: 4 pm to 9 pm on Fridays and 9 am to 4 pm on Saturdays & Sundays
  September 21,22,23 &    Art Across the Ages: Fiber 1. Experience ancient, medieval, Renaissance
    28,29,30 of 2007      and modern fiber techniques, including felting, paper and rope making,
                          basketry, spinning and weaving,
   October 19,20,21 &     Art Across the Ages: Fiber 2. Explore various methods of applying patterns
    26,27,28 of 2007      to fibers, such as Shibori, batik, indigo & French Serti. Methods range from
                          ancient to modern techniques.
   November 9,10,11 &     Art Across the Ages: Metal. Explore ancient, medieval, Renaissance &
    16,17,18 of 2007      modern metal, including copper planishing, blacksmithing, welding & Precious
                          Metal Clay.
December 7,8,9 & 14,15,16 Art Across the Ages: Clay. Process local clay, hand build and throw pots,
         of 2007          then fire them in primitive and modern kilns.
   Spring Semester 2008 ~ Times: 4 pm to 9 pm on Fridays and 9 am to 4 pm on Saturdays & Sundays
   January 11,12,13 &      Art Across the Ages: Stone. Experience the ancient, medieval, Renaissance
    18,19,20 of 2008       & modern uses of stone for shelters, tools and decoration.
February 8,9,10 & 15,16,17 Art Across the Ages: Wood. Explore wood as it was for shelters, furniture,
         of 2008           tools, weapons and decoration. Carve, paint, stain, burn and laminate as
                                     various cultures have done from ancient to modern times.
February 22,23,24 & 29 of            Science Curriculum Development. Vertically articulate curriculum by looking
          2008                       at a grade cluster and integrating learning from the grade previous to the

 March 7,8,9 & 14,15,16 of           Ancient Techniques & Technologies: Wood. Make your own stone chisels to
           2008                      shape wood, then carve, stain and embellish wooden carvings as in ancient

April 11,12,13 & 18,19,20 of         Science Instructional Design. Develop a complete thematic unit that connects

  April 25,26,27 of 2008             Art Across the Ages: Glass. Hands-on glass experiences, including making

              Summer Semester 2008 ~ Times: 8 am to 4 pm daily Monday through Friday
May 9,10,11 & 16,17,18 of Ancient Techniques & Technologies: Metal. Build a copper smelter in the
          2008            ancient tradition, planish a copper bowl, forge iron and explore other
                                     metalworking techniques of ancient times.
  June 16,17,18,19,20 of             Ancient techniques & Technologies: Glass. Build and fire an ancient beading
          2008                       furnace and glass making furnace, as well as exploring the ancient glass
                                     techniques of fusing, beading and stained glass.
  June 23,24,25,26,27 of             Science Curriculum Development. Vertically articulate curriculum by looking
          2008                       at a grade cluster and integrating learning from the grade previous to the
                                     grade following.
 July 7,8,9,10,11 of 2008            Art Across the Ages: Paint. Explore various cultural forms of painting from the
                                     Stone Age to modern times, including the processes and materials and the
                                     science behind painting in various cultures and times.
July 14,15,16,17,18 of 2008          Art Across the Ages: Paper. Investigate “pre-paper” from the Stone Age
                                     carvings and ancient papyrus through Medieval and Renaissance times to
                                     modern manuscript paper and laminated cardboard furniture.
July 21,22,23,24,25 of 2008          Ancient Techniques & Technologies: Fiber. Experience a fiber intensive by
                                     exploring ancient methods of making and decorating paper, fabrics and other
                                     fiber forms.
 July 28,29,30,31 of 2008            Ancient Techniques & Technologies: Stone. Learn how to make ancient tools
             &                       for working stone, knap flint arrowheads, and carve soapstone sculptures in
      August 1, 2008                 the ancient tradition.

 August 4,5,6,7,8 of 2008            Art Across the Ages: Printing. Explore printing techniques from ancient
                                     Chinese wood block to medieval moveable clay type to lithography, intaglio
                                     and photography to more modern screen printing, linotypes, sun prints and
                                     contemporary graphics.
 August 11,12,13,14,15 of            Science Instructional Design. Develop a complete thematic unit that connects
          2008                       learning across curricula
 August 18,19,20,21,22 of            Ancient Techniques & Technologies: Clay. Explore ancient pottery from
          2008                       digging clay and processing it, to hand building pots to building and firing
                                     primitive kilns.

                                                              The Location
  Raven Hill Discovery Center is located between East Jordan and Boyne City, Michigan just off C-48
  at Pearsall Road and five minutes from the South Arm of Lake Charlevoix. Its mission is to build life-
  long connections for children & adults that link science, history & the arts in a hands-on learning
