                                    PUPIL MOBILE PHONE POLICY

Dame Janet Community Junior School discourages pupils from bringing mobile phones to school, but
accepts that in exceptional circumstances parents may give their children mobile phones to enable
communication and to protect them from everyday risks involving personal security and safety.

The following ‘Acceptable Use’ guidelines are based on guidance from the DfE and support the school’s
Health and Safety, Anti-bullying, Child Safeguarding and e-Safety policies.

 Pupils, their parents or guardians must read, understand and sign these ‘Acceptable Use’ guidelines
before pupils are given permission to bring mobile phones to school. Failure to follow these guidelines
may result in permission being revoked.
 The ‘Acceptable Use’ guidelines for mobile phones also apply to pupils during school excursions and
    extra-curricular activities.
 Exceptions to this would be in an emergency situation and only then with the express approval of a
    senior member of school staff.
 The phone must be clearly labelled with the child’s name, switched off and given in to the class teacher
or the School office upon arrival at school.
 The phone must be collected at the end of the school day.
 The phone must be concealed whilst leaving the school premises.
 Where a pupil is found with a mobile in school, including the playground, the phone will be taken from
the pupil and placed in the School Office. Parents will be contacted to collect the phone.
 If a pupil is found taking photographs or video footage with a mobile phone of either pupils or
teachers, this will be regarded as a serious offence and the Headteacher will decide on appropriate
disciplinary action. If images of other pupils or teachers have been taken, the phone will not be
returned to the pupil until the images have been removed by an appropriate person. Using mobile
phones to bully and threaten other students is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. In some cases it
    can constitute criminal behaviour.
 Pupils should protect their phone numbers by only giving them to friends and keeping a note of who
they have given them to. This can help protect the pupil’s number from falling into the wrong hands and
guard against the receipt of insulting, threatening or unpleasant voice, text and picture messages.
 The teaching staff reserve the right to view the content of any child’s mobile phone at any time in
respect of issues regarding the safeguarding of children.
 If a pupil needs to contact his/her parents/guardians they will be allowed to use a school phone. If
parents need to contact children urgently they should phone the School Office and a message will be
    relayed promptly.
 Parents are advised that Dame Janet Community Junior School accepts no liability for the loss or
damage to mobile phones which are brought into the school.
                                                                                                 March 2012

I have read and understood the Pupil Mobile Phone Policy.
