CARTERET COUNTY CROSROADS 29th ANNUAL MEETING

March 5, 2009 at Joslyn Hall, CCC
Coffee, fellowship, silent auction and cookies at 6:30 pm,
                                       Meeting at 7:00 pm.

The topic is: A SENSE OF PLACE:
UNIQUE ENVIRONMENTAL FEATURES OF CARTERET COUNTY.

The waters of Core, Back and Bogue Sounds support some of the finest submerged
aquatic vegetation (SAV) areas in the United States. These grass beds are essential fish habi-
tat, home to unique species of fish and invertebrates. They also provide food and shelter for
critical life stages of species of commercial and recreational importance. Our speakers will
highlight different aspects of this beautiful and important natural habitat.
Jud Kenworthy from our local NOAA lab will describe the workings of the grass com-
munity itself.
Steve Fegley from our local UNC Institute of Marine Sciences will speak on the im-
portant animal interactions associated with grass beds.
Dan Speiser of Duke University will take a very close look at one of the keystone spe-
cies of our grass beds, the Bay Scallop, as he speaks on their visual capabilities.

The Annual Meeting is a great place to meet friends, pay your Crossroads dues and talk about
the important environmental problems facing our community. Please come to this important meeting.
If you can’t make the meeting, we still want to make you aware of some of our new outreach
programs. Our new member of the Advisory council, Jeff Moore, has redone our website and we in-
vite you to visit www.carteretcrossroads.org to see the new version. He has also helped us estab-
lished a listserv, which can be found at: http://groups.google.com/group/CarteretCrossroads?lnk=srg
We invite everyone, members and non-members to join the group and participate in the discussions.

                                        SEE YOU AT THE MEETING
