Montana State Genealogical Society General Meeting Comfort Inn, Gardiner, MT Sept 23, 2007 The general meeting of the Montana State Genealogical Society was held Saturday, Sept 23, 2007 at the Comfort Inn in Gardiner, MT. Robert Cummings called the meeting to order at 7:30a.m. Roll call of officers was called. Those present were: Robert Cummings, President, Verba Valentine, 1 st Vice President, Carol Woodley, 2 nd Vice P P P P President, Nancy Alley, Treasurer, Shirley Rogers, Secretary, Mary Pitch, Registrar, Betty Marshall, Immediate Past President, Paulette Parpart, and Collections Development Chair. Terry Atwood, External Affairs, Al Stoner & Fern Kaufman, First Families of Montana. Societies represented were: Beaver Head Hunters Genealogy Society, Dillon, Broken Mountain Genealogy Society, Liberty Co., Bitterroot Genealogical Society, , , Central Montana Genealogy Society, Lewistown, Jefferson County Genealogy Society, Boulder, Lewis & Clark Genealogy Society, Helena, Sheridan Co. Daybreakers Genealogy Society, , Park Co., Genealogy Society, Livingston, Western Montana Genealogy Society, Missoula, Yellowstone Genealogy Forum, Billings. Secretary U U Shirley read the minutes from the Sept 15, 2005 general meeting held in Missoula. Betty made a motion to accept the minutes as read. Al Stoner seconded. Motion passed. Treasurer U U Nancy reported that we have $16,237.92 of which $9026.35 is in the First Families of Montana account. This is before the conference costs have been deducted. Registrar U Mary reported she has 452 members of which she has 213 e-mail addresses. She contacted all the members and had 27 come back as undeliverable. She contacted officers from each society and has received 22 corrections. We have no e-mail addresses for Powell Co. Genealogical Society and Central Montana Genealogical Society except for their officers. She hopes to acquire them soon. She is open to any suggestions to help with communications with members. 2nd Vice President U Carol is offering a white t-shirt sale. Only $5 until they are gone. Conference bags are $1.50. Pins are still available. Nomination of Officers U U Betty offered the following slate of officers up for nominations of officers: Robert Cummings, President Shawna Valentine, 1 st Vice President P P Karolyn Simpson and Sylvia Murray, Treasurer Federation of Genealogy Societies U U Shirley reported on the FGS conference in Boston. She thanked the society for picking her to go to the conference. She said that there were so many seminars that they had 4 different syllabuses, one for each day of the conference. At the delegate luncheon each society got to toot their own horn on what they have done in the past year and what they are working on. It was very informative conference and she is looking forward to going to Fort Wayne Aug 15-18, 2007. The board has picked Loretta Chapman as our delegate for the 2007 conference in Ft. Wayne, IN. First Families of Montana U U Al Stoner requested that our local societies put ads in their newsletter about the First Families books. She encourages all members who qualify to apply to be in the First Families Book, Vol. 3. Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 are still available on the MSGS website. MSGS Library U U We have received 530 linear feet of non Montana books from the Montana State Historical Society. We still have 30 books to unpack and shelf. Montana Shared Catalog System. Initial cost will be $2400 with $600 yearly cost for maintained. We are applying for a grant for $1000 that will help cover the start up cost. . Lewis & Clark Society has offered to pay 25% of the cost and MSGS will cover the balance. 2006 Conference U U Park County Genealogy Society has everything in place for a great conference. Our speakers will provide us with lots of genealogy know how. 2007 Conference U U 2007 Conference will be in Billings Oct 5 & 6 at the Holiday Inn. It will be hosted by the Yellowstone Genealogy Forum. The keynote speaker will be Sandra Lubing from Illinois. We will also have Birdie Holsclaw for part of the program. There will be 3 topics each session that will cover a large range of subjects. There will be local speakers for most topics and this will help keep the cost down, but give everyone a chance to pick what topic they want to hear. We have been having problems getting venders to come this far with gas cost, etc., but we did get one signed this week. He has a large collection of books for us to browse. 2008 Conference U U We are looking at Havre for 2008. Elections: Elections were help. New officers for 2006-07 are: President: Robert Cummings 1 st Vice President: Shawna Valentine P P Treasurer: Sylva Murray Awards U The Anna Mae Hanson Award was won by Nita Smith of Yellowstone Genealogy Forum. Thank you all for submitting your applicants. Cleve would like more input from our local societies. He will put a link to your local webpage is you send it to him. After much discussion, it was decided that an announcements concerning society members will go thru Mary Pitch. This way we know what is being sent out regarding our state society. If you have something you need other societies to know or that you need to have from them, contact Mary and she will send it out to everyone. No other use of society members e-mail addresses may be used. 1930 Census U U 15 counties are completed. Others are in various stages of completion. There were 580,000 people in Montana in 193. We will not be selling this index. Each society will have a couple of copies for their use and then we will have available on line for public use. There are still several counties that need to be done. Bob is willing to help anyone get started if they need help Montana Death Index U We are still getting request for the death index. We have received reports that some people are not on the index. Bob is working on how to do corrections and additions to the index. The index is from 1870-1905 and 1907-2002. It is available on the MSGS website for $20. The next general meeting will be at conference in Billing on Oct. 6, 2007. Meeting adjourned at 8:45 am. Respectfully submitted, Shirley Rogers Secretary
