A Prayer Guide
The Christian Reformed Church
Ways to use this prayer guide:
This prayer guide provides Scripture-based prayer prompts to help you pray for the Christian Reformed
Church as it seeks to transform lives and communities locally and worldwide in the name of Jesus Christ.
Participants are urged to pray for one hour a week for one year. You can do the one hour in a single
prayer time, two thirty-minute prayer times, or as part of your daily prayer times.
Use the prayer prompts in a way that fits you. Listen to what God has to say through his Word and Spirit.
Let his words to you shape your words to him. The prayer prompts below suggest ways to intercede. Let
the Spirit help you add prayers of praise, thanks and confession. Consider exploring the Scripture
references to further expand your prayers.
Note: The italicized words in the prayer prompts are either key words or Scripture-based phrases to help
you connect your prayers with God’s Word.
Sunday: Worship, Proclamation, Fellowship, Service, Unity
Pray that all of us in the Christian Reformed Church will be the kind of worshipers that the Father
seeks—true worshipers who worship him in spirit and truth (John 4:23-24).
Pray that all who proclaim the gospel in our churches may be empowered by the Holy Spirit and enabled
to preach the Word of God boldly and clearly (Acts 1:8, 4:31, 1 Tim. 4:13, 2 Tim. 4:2).
Pray that all our relationships may reflect the fact that we live lives of love, just as Christ loved us and
gave himself for us as a fragrant offering to God (Eph. 5:2).
Pray that every church member will use whatever gifts he or she has received to serve others, faithfully
administering God’s grace in its various forms (1 Pet. 4:10).
Ask God to make his grace abound to us all so that we will generously give of our time, talents and gifts
for the benefit of others, and abound in every good work (2 Cor. 9:6-8).
Pray that we will be able to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace, realizing that as
members of one body we are called to peace (Eph. 4:3, Col. 3:15).
Monday: Leaders, Pastors, Elders, Deacons, Chaplains, Missionaries
Pray that the leaders of our denomination will ground their lives in prayer, clearly discern God’s will and
vision for our churches, and lead us in that direction. Pray that the Holy Spirit will give them the strength,
courage, health, support and spiritual gifts to be fruitful (Prov. 3:5-6, Gal. 5:22-23, Eph. 5:18).
Pray that all our church leaders will receive from God himself everything they need for life and godliness,
and will become servant leaders who, like Christ, are called not to be served but to serve (Matt. 20:26-28,
2 Pet. 1:3).
Pray that God will give wisdom and integrity to our pastors, elders and deacons as they watch over
themselves and the flock. Pray that they may be mature in faith and will conduct their duties with prayer,
patience and humility (Acts 6:4, 20:28, 1Tim. 3:2-13).
Pray for those who serve as chaplains in prisons, hospitals, counseling centers and military contexts, that
streams of living water (the Spirit) will flow from within them to those who have spiritual, emotional and
emotional needs (John 7:38-39).
Pray for missionaries who bring the message of the gospel to other lands. Pray that they may make
disciples of the nations and teach them to obey everything that Christ commanded (Matt. 28:19-20).
Pray that God will strengthen our church planters, church developers and their core groups. Pray that the
Word of God will grow and prevail mightily through them (Acts. 19:20).
Tuesday: Education, Teaching Resources, Faith Nurture
Pray that church teachers and counselors will communicate biblical truths clearly and faithfully so
children, teens and adults will be taught, reproved, corrected and trained in righteousness and be
thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Tim. 3:16-17).
Pray for the people writing, editing and publishing our church education materials. Ask that through these
resources the word of Christ will dwell in us richly as we teach and admonish one another with all
wisdom (Col. 3:16).
Pray that those who lead and teach at our primary and secondary schools will be faithful to the whole
counsel of the Word of God and will help our children grow in wisdom and in stature and in favor with
God and with people (Luke 2:52).
Pray that the light of God’s Word will shine on all learning in our Seminary and our Colleges. Pray that
they will effectively integrate the Christian faith into their curriculums as they prepare young men and
women to think noble thoughts and to serve as godly leaders (Ps. 119:105, Prov. 9:10, Phil. 4:8).
Pray that God will fulfill every good purpose of our Youth Unlimited leaders so that their ministries will
nurture the lives of our young people and cause them to remember their Creator in the days of their
youth. (Eccl. 12:1, 2 Th. 1:11-12).
Wednesday: Broadcast, Funding, Missions, Outreach, Reformation
Pray that God will reform the Christian Reformed Church wherever reformation is needed and will build
our Church in such a way that it will be everything he intends it to be so gates of hell will never overcome
us (Matt. 16:18).
Pray that all our churches will reach out with the good news to a world where millions are estranged from
God. Pray that our light will shine before others so that they will see our good deeds and praise our
Father in heaven (Mt. 5:16).
Pray for World Missions leaders as they recruit, train, and support those whom God would send into his
harvest field. Pray that God will open doors for them to proclaim the good news and call people to
repentance, faith in Christ, and obedience (Matt. 9:37-38).
Pray for Home Missions leaders as they assist established churches and newly planted churches to gather
God’s growing family. Ask God to give us all a burden for the lost and to help all our churches reach out
to those who are like sheep without a shepherd (Matt. 16:18, John 10:16, Rom. 9:1-3).
Pray that those who broadcast the good news by means of radio, television, video, Internet and print
media will speak in words taught by the Spirit and will proclaim the eternal gospel to those who live on
the earth—to every nation, tribe, language and people (1 Cor. 2:11-14, Rev. 14:6).
Pray for adequate funds to carry on and expand the mission work of the church, for excellent resources
and effective leaders (Luke 10:2, 2 Cor. 8:12).
Thursday: Abuse, Disability, Justice, Loneliness, Relief, Racism
Pray that justice will flow down like a river as Christ’s comfort overflows through us to those who suffer
from poverty, loneliness, abuse, guilt and insecurity (Amos 5:24, 2 Cor. 1:4-5).
Pray for the CRWRC as they respond to needs of people who suffer from poverty, disaster and injustice.
Pray that God will use them and us to joyfully serve the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the unclothed,
the sick and those in prison (Matt. 25:35-40).
Pray that believers in our churches will eliminate the causes and effects of racism within the body and
experience true biblical reconciliation. Pray for the humility to consider others better than ourselves
Pray that each congregation will become safe place where the infinite value of each person is honored
and all relationships are open, honest and safe. Pray that we will always seek the good of others and look
to their interests (Phil. 2:4, 1 Cor. 10:14).
Pray that our churches will be communities where those with disabilities are welcomed, nurtured, and
given opportunity to use their gifts (Phm.17, 1 Pet. 4:10)
Pray that our congregations will tirelessly live out the love that we have been given in Jesus Christ in
such a way that this love will cause non-Christians in our communities to want it for themselves (John
13:34-35, 1 Jn. 4:20).
Friday: Families, Singles, Marriage, Parents, Sons and Daughters
Pray that the families of our churches will have genuine love and concern for each other and be able to
display the fruit of the Spirit in all their relations—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness and self control. (Gal. 5:22-23, Eph. 5:22-6:4).
Pray the single in our churches will find their lives nurtured in the fellowship of God’s family and be
enabled to add their love and service to building the kingdom of God as part of a loving community (1
Pray that God will give us strong marriages in which spouses love each other with a love that is patient,
kind, not proud or self-seeking—a love that protects, trusts, hopes, perseveres and builds up their
marriage partner (1 Cor. 13:4-8).
Pray that God will restore failing marriages and will help the marriage partners not to keep record of
wrongs, but to rejoice in the truth. Pray that God will give them the ability to forgive, to cherish each
other and to receive affection (1 Cor. 13:4-8).
Pray that by God’s grace, parents will be able to train up their children in the ways they should go so that
our children will always walk in his ways. Pray that God will give our young people the discernment and
ability to choose the ways of wisdom over foolishness (Prov. 2:12-15, Prov. 22:6).
Pray that our sons and daughters who have wandered from the faith will be restored and that unbelieving
family members will come to know the saving love of Christ (Ps. 51:10-12, Luke 15:11-24).
Saturday: Disciplines, Giving, Revival, Spiritual Growth, Thanksgiving
Pray that the Spirit will ignite a prayer movement in each congregation that will transform the church and
its surrounding communities. Pray that revival fires will spread to the whole denomination and beyond (2
Pray that all in the Church will continue to grow in the grace and the knowledge of your Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ (2 Pet. 3:18).
Pray that we will obey the Spirit’s promptings as he urges us to make petitions, prayers, intercession and
thanksgiving for all people, knowing that this is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people
to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth (1 Tim. 2:1, 3, 4).
Pray that the Word of God will be the important guide in our lives as we meditate on it day and night and
become like trees planted by streams of living water, that yield their fruit in season and whose leaves do
not wither (Ps. 1:3).
Pray that we will all be cheerful givers who know what it means to sow and reap generously and who
discover God’s abounding grace, so that we have all that we need, and abound in every good work (2
“Thanks be to God, who always leads us in victory through Christ. God uses us to spread his
knowledge everywhere like a sweet-smelling perfume. Our offering to God is this: We are the sweet
smell of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are being lost” (2 Cor.
