                             DEPARTMENT OF RESIDENTIAL LIFE
                                       RESIDENCE HALL DIRECTOR
                                             Job Description
                                               2012 – 2013

Residence Hall Directors (RHDs) are staff members of the Student Life Office, a department in the Student
Affairs Division. As such, they are expected to work toward the objectives of the Minot State University
residence hall program. To do so involves energy, self-discipline, control and commitment. Among the skills
and/or characteristics needed are: good judgment, ability to work under pressure, understanding of students,
sense of humor, flexibility and effective communication.

No statement can be made as to the exact number of hours RHDs must devote to the position. This will vary
from hall to hall and from one day to the next. It should be understood that the position is demanding in time
and effort and availability is a large part of being a successful RHD.

This contract is by no means an all-inclusive listing of RHD responsibilities. The Student Life staff may require
the RHD to carry out further specific duties.

REQUIREMENTS:
1. Must be enrolled at Minot State University. If a married couple, one spouse must be enrolled, graduate
   student status preferred.
2. The Student Life staff is supportive of the academic success of its employees. In order to be effective in the
RHD position, as well as their studies, RHDs are expected to maintain a cumulative and semester GPA of
2.25. Continued failure to maintain a 2.25 GPA may affect employment status. Continued employment is
dependent on a positive, significant progress toward a degree.
3. RHD staff meetings will be held every other week, more frequently as necessary. Attendance is required.
4. RHDs are expected to abide by all residence hall and University policies and support the decisions and
actions of the Student Life staff.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
1. Occupy designated RHD living quarters throughout the contract period. The Student Life office reserves
the right to reassign you to any hall during the contract period, including interim periods. Lodging during
the contract period will be provided at the expense of your employer.
2. LEAVE PERIODS:
   a. Two consecutive weekend nights off once per month (non-cumulative). RHDs may leave after 12:00
noon the first day (Friday) and return by 10:00 pm the third day (Sunday). No three day weekend is
guaranteed. The building must be covered by 2 RAs and a back-up RHD (name of whom must be noted
in the time off request calendar in the office of the Residence Life Coordinator) in order for the RHD to
take a weekend off. The halls will be open all holiday weekends and for semester break housing in a
residence hall to be announced. All leave must be approved in advance by the Director of Student Life
       and/or Residence Life Coordinator.
   b. RHDs must cover their assigned hall the night the halls close and may leave the following day. They
must return the day prior to opening of halls for Spring Semester, or earlier if necessary for training
       purposes.
   c. RHDs will be expected to cover their assigned halls between spring and summer semester, and between
summer and fall semester. Leave during this time will be approved in advance by the Director of
Student Life and/or Residence Life Coordinator. If assigned to an open building over Winter Break it
will be the responsibility of the RHD to find building coverage if time off is desired.
   d. During the summer, RHDs will be expected to run their buildings as needed for summer school and on-
       campus conferences.
   e. During Thanksgiving and Easter Breaks, RHDs may make arrangements to have a RA from their hall
staffs cover their hall. The Director of Student Life and/or Residence Life Coordinator must approve
this person in advance and any compensation of this person will be the responsibility of the RHD. If
leave is approved, this will count as your weekend off for that month.
3. The initial 3 months of this contract will be considered probationary until completion of the formal RHD
evaluation process in November. At this time, a determination will be made as to the employment status.
Possible results from this evaluation will be the end of probation, continuation of probation or termination.
4. Only RHDs and their immediate family may reside in the RHD apartment.
5. RHDs will report to the Residence Life Coordinator and the Director of Student Life.
6. RHDs are required to spend each night in the hall unless leave periods have been approved and are not
allowed to travel outside of a 30 mile radius during the day without permission and advanced notice to the
Residence Life Coordinator. This is to ensure that in the event of a hall emergency, the RHD can return
     promptly to the hall.

COMMITMENT:
1. RHD duties take precedence over all non-academic activities.
2. No other employment will be permitted during the term of this contract. Exceptions will be considered on
   an individual basis.
3. Outside academic experiences (student teaching, practicum, clinical, etc.) must receive approval prior to the
semester they occur and will be subject to periodic review in relation to job performance.
4. The RHD will be available to residents at appropriate times and maintain 5 posted availability hours for the
RA staff and hall residents to visit or seek out guidance as necessary.

and remind them of the goals and objectives.
3. The RHD will keep the RAs informed of residence hall information and will communicate the RAs
concerns or problems to the Director of Student Life and/or Residence Life Coordinator.
