                                           Pride & Prejudice, Jane Austen

                                         *Lord of the Flies, William Golding
                                          Wuthering Heights, Emily Bronte

 *means that we will be reading this novel as a class at some point later in the year; if you want to get a head start, you might
                                                 consider reading one of these.

                                             Summer Reading Instructions

   1. Decide which novel from the choice list you want to read; email Ms. Hanson
      ( and Ms. Wendling ( your choice
      by JULY 1st. Read 1984. Read the book you choose.
   2. Complete the Reader Response Sheets (complete one for each novel).
   3. Complete the Major Works Study Sheets (complete one for each novel).
       Complete a Reader Response Sheet and a Major Works Study Sheet for each of the
           books. Those sheets follow on the next few pages. These responses may be
           handwritten. Limit yourself to the space provided on the “Major Works Study Sheets.”
           Where I ask for page numbers, please provide them.
   4. All assignments above are due on the first day of school. There will be an in-class essay
      upon your return, where you will answer an AP test-like question about these books.
   5. These assignments will count as approximately 15% of your 1st quarter grade.
           Reader Responses (16 points each)

           In-Class Essay when you return to school (20 points)

   WARNING—Because of the heavy reading load assigned for each grading period, you will not be
   able to do “catch-up” reading during the school year. Summer reading must be done during the
   summer in order to have a successful school year.
