                                         Minutes of 9/29/09 Meeting

Old business:
 NAMI Walks took place in Minneapolis on September 26. Four NAMI Duluth members walked, along
      with family and friends.
 St. Louis County Conference is next Monday and Tuesday, October 5 and 6. We would like to have two
people signed up per time slot to staff our booth, so we need a few more volunteers. NAMI Duluth will
also show the film “Out of the Shadow” (depression), with a discussion after facilitated by Jewel S.
 NAMI Duluth Area is on the verge of becoming a nonprofit organization through NAMI Minnesota.
This will also include site insurance for our programs.
 Next month’s affiliate meeting will be a showing of the film “Out of the Shadow” (schizophrenia)
      followed by discussion.
 Brian M. handed out a list of NAMI Duluth’s goals and accomplishments for 2008-2009 (attached).
 Brian also handed out tentative affiliate goals for 2009-2010 (attached).
 NAMI Duluth Area affiliate currently has 40 paid members. We have approximately $10,000 in our
account, of which approximately $8,000 is grant money dedicated to suicide prevention.

Board election:
An election was held for two open board positions for NAMI Duluth Area. The following people were
nominated: Tani Hemmila, Joyce Ilola, Wendi Eliasen, and Steve Christen. Steve withdrew his candidacy as
he would like to spend some time as a “foot soldier” with us, learning more about our affiliate. Tani and Joyce
were elected to the open seats. Thank you to all for running for these positions! Thank you to Jean Dickson
and Dave Hendren for their service as board members, helping us through our first year!

Board terms are 3 years in length. If a board member cannot serve out his/her full term, the board can name a
replacement to finish the term. Only paid members can vote in board elections.

Presentation:
Tani H. and Chris F. gave their first In Our Own Voice presentation to the group. This was an effective and
well-done presentation/discussion, and we thank Tani and Chris for sharing their stories. They will give the
presentation again on October 8, during Mental Health Awareness Week.

Next meeting:
Tuesday, October 27, 2009, 7-9 pm, Miller-Dwan meeting rooms 1-3, Duluth
Agenda: Showing of the film “Out of the Shadow” (schizophrenia) followed by discussion
