Jackie Roosevelt Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia on January 31, 1919. He grew up in Pasadena, California with his
mother and four older siblings. Robinson excelled as a young athlete in high school and junior college; at UCLA he lettered
in four sports: baseball, basketball, football and track.

Jackie Robinson left school in 1941, worked briefly as an athletic director and played semi-professional football for the
Honolulu Bears before being drafted to the Army in 1942. Robinson was instrumental in opening an Officer Candidate
School to black soldiers and served as a second lieutenant with the 761st battalion. While in basic training he was arrested
and court-martialed for refusing to move to the back of a bus; he was acquitted and received an honorable discharge in
1944 without ever seeing combat.

Robinson joined the Negro League Kansas City Monarchs in 1945, a team featuring such stars as Satchel Paige and Buck
O’Neil. His stellar play and demeanor caught the eye of Branch Rickey of the Brooklyn Dodgers, who signed him to play for
the Montreal Royals, a Dodger farm team. In 1946, he led the International League in batting average and fielding percentage
and was called up to the Dodgers on April 15, 1947, which is now celebrated annually as Jackie Robinson Day.

That first year he played in 151 games, hit .297, led the National League in stolen bases and won the first-ever Rookie of
the Year Award. Two years later, he won the 1949 National League MVP award and by 1950 had become the highest paid
player in Dodgers history. In his ten-year career, he helped the Dodgers win six pennants and one World Series. He was
inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962, his first year of eligibility. In 1972 the Dodgers retired his uniform number
42 and in 1997, the rest of Major League Baseball followed suit.

Jackie Robinson was an inspiration off the field as well. He was a noted civil-rights activist and catalyst for social change.
He was also a family man, married since 1946 to Rachel Issum, a nursing student he had met while at UCLA. Together they
raised three children: Jackie Jr., Sharon and David.

After he retired from baseball, Robinson involved himself in business ventures that encouraged black economic development.
He became the vice-president of personnel for the Chock Full O’ Nuts corporation and served on the board of the
NAACP. He established the Jackie Robinson Construction Company to build affordable housing for low- and moderate-
income black families. His many civic activities included work with children and adolescents, especially those involved in
the YMCA.

Robinson’s health began to deteriorate rapidly in the early 1970s. On Oct. 15, 1972, he attended a World Series game in
Cincinnati that included a commemoration of the 25th anniversary of his breaking the color barrier. During pre-game
ceremonies, he spoke of his wish for a black manager to be hired by a Major League Baseball team. Ten days later, on Oct.
24, Jackie Robinson died of a heart attack at his home in Stamford, Connecticut.

In 1997, under the leadership of our honorary chair Jerry Coleman, the first annual Tribute & Scholarship Dinner was held
to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Jackie Robinson’s major league baseball debut, and the first Little Padres Park
donated to the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA by John Moores and the San Diego Padres.

At that first dinner, we were able to award scholarships to three very deserving students. As the years have passed, this
event has grown tremendously. In 2009, we’re proud to say that ten college-bound seniors will benefit from your generosity,
bringing the total number of scholarships awarded through this event to more than 110.

We are pleased that you have joined with us to congratulate the 13th Annual Jackie Robinson Family YMCA
Scholarship Award recipients. These scholarships are intended to support and encourage the pursuit of
higher education for Southeastern San Diego students, to create opportunities for academic, social, and
career success. Thank you for sharing our commitment to the growth and development of youth in our community.

Education, to me, means opportunity. It means freedom in what you want to
pursue in life because of a high level of knowledge and understanding. My parents
did not get a great education so being the first one in my family to attend a four-
year university and earn my bachelor’s degree would mean a lot for me and my
family. The JRYMCA scholarship is important to me because it will help me in
realizing my dreams of attending and graduating from a four-year institution.

I am extremely grateful to the Jackie Robinson YMCA for awarding me this scholarship in
support of my college journey. Without scholarships like this I would attend community
college. Now however, I am proud to announce that I have been accepted to Pepperdine
and expect to attend my top choice in the fall. In the end, this scholarship will help
fulfill my dream to become a Sports Medicine Doctor for a professional NFL team.

  Congratulations to the scholarship awardees!

The Southeast YMCA opened its doors in 1943 and moved its headquarters to 45th Street (now YMCA Way) and
Imperial Avenue in 1961. Fifteen acres of land were donated by Greenwood Mortuary, while the first structure was
hand-built by a dedicated and visionary group of community leaders. In 1973, the branch was renamed the Jackie
Robinson Memorial YMCA, and today serves an ethnically diverse community of over a quarter of a million people.
Every day we extend our reach to people of all ages with a variety of needs and interests. Our staff and volunteers
are committed to making a real difference in the lives of those we serve, working together to build strong kids, strong
families and strong communities.

For many children and families in Southeast San Diego, the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA is a safe haven. We offer
youth sports and aquatics programs year-round, as well as after-school activities and a large technology center. Day
camp during the holidays is a fun, developmental experience for hundreds of kids. Through fundraising and grantwriting,
we are able to provide program subsidies to more than 85% of our program participants. It’s our goal that no one be
turned away due to inability to pay. Joining a sport not only encourages a healthy lifestyle, it can help motivate a youth
to break the cycle of violence in this community by encouraging fitness of spirit, mind and body.

The Jackie Robinson Family YMCA is dedicated to improving the quality of human life and helping all people realize their
fullest potential as children of God through development of the spirit, mind, and body. At the YMCA, the character values
of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility are at the heart of all our programs and activities. As the namesake
memorial to Jackie Robinson we also have a responsibility to continue the legacy of breaking all barriers through the
values of courage, persistence, integrity, justice, teamwork, citizenship, determination, commitment, and excellence that
Jackie Robinson stood for as we strive to meet the mission of the YMCA.

       In loving memory of

Greetings and welcome to the 13th Annual Jackie Robinson Family YMCA
Tribute & Scholarship Gala!

For the past thirteen years, the San Diego community has come together
to pay tribute to the life and legacy of Jack Roosevelt “Jackie” Robinson,
the first African-American major league baseball player. Jackie Robinson’s
accomplishments on and off the field personified courage in the struggle
for justice and equality in America. Jackie Robinson was also a strong
proponent of the YMCA, having worked during the off-season as a YMCA
volunteer in New York. Now, America has come full circle by electing
Barack Obama as the first African-American President of the United Tony Gwynn, Edna Malaga, Christine Basic, Christopher Wright
States. In large part we can thank Mr. Robinson for initiating that effort. 1997 Tribute & Scholarship Dinner

Therefore it is most fitting that the country’s only YMCA bearing his
name would hold this annual tribute in honor of one of our nation’s finest
heroes. TABLE OF CONTENTS
