Types of Migration
Emigration is migration FROM a location
Immigration is migration TO a location
Form of mobility, which is any type of movement from one place to another
Short, repetitive movements that occur on a regular basis are called circulation
International- permanent movement from one country to another
Internal- permanent movement from within the same country
Interregional- movement from one region of a country to another
Intraregional- movement within one region
Voluntary- person CHOSE to move for economic improvement (job opportunities)
Forced- migrant compelled to move by cultural factors (things such as The Inquisition)
Migration transition- changes in a society compared to those of a demographic
transition
Chain migration- migration of people to a specific location because those of the same
nationality previously migrated there (the beginning of the U.S., the New Land)
Brain drain- large-scale emigration by talented people
Factors
Push factor- induces people to move out of their present location (natural disaster)
Pull factor- induces people to move to a new location (jobs)
Environmental (natural disasters), Economic (recession), Cultural (religion)
Laws and Regulations
Undocumented immigrants- those who enter a country without proper documents
Quotas- maximum limits on the number of people who can migrate to the U.S. from each
country during a one year period
Guest workers- citizens of poor countries who obtain jobs in Western Europe and the Middle
East
Counterurbanization- net migration from urban to rural areas
