					                                       IAT: Implicit Association Test
                                            Project Instructions

You need to go the following website: https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/

Select “Demonstration” and follow the instructions to take the RACE IAT. The others are interesting
too, and some of them are race related so I’d love to know what you think about those as well, but they
are not required. After you click on the RACE IAT button, just follow the instructions. Feel free to
take the test multiple times if you wish, all I ask is that you keep track of your results after each test. It
will take you about 10 minutes to complete.

After the test is over you need to answer the questions below in 3-4 pages. Make sure you number
each question.

    1. What does the IAT measure?

    2. Some people have made the claim that the IAT is simply a measure of hand-eye coordination. The
researchers and test designers would argue that this is not the case. Why?

    3. Why do the instructions require you to work quickly?

    4. The setup of the IAT is unique. Why is the test designed in this particular way?

    5. What did the overall results (revealed to you after completed the test) tell you about U.S. society?

    6. How do you think implicit biases might have played a role in Hurricane Katrina?

    7. How are implicit biases formed?

In your answers, be sure to refer to the information and links on the BACKGROUND tab on the
IAT website (https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/demo/background/index.jsp) as well as “The
Bias Finders” article on the class website (http://joshpackard.com/courses/intro-to-sociology/).
