BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN INTERDISICPLINARY STUDIES DEGREE
Arkansas State University offers the Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies
(BSIS) degree program through University College. The BSIS is designed to allow
students the flexibility to develop an individualized program of study, using the
existing course offerings in ASU’s other colleges.
In consultation with the academic advisor, BSIS students select three areas of
emphasis from any of ASU’s majors or minors. Although no specific courses are
required within any of these areas, students must complete a minimum 18 hours of
course work in each for a total of 54 hours in the three emphasis areas.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BSIS DEGREE
Students interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary
Studies (BSIS) must schedule a personal interview with a BSIS adviser. During this
interview, the adviser will outline in detail the requirements of the BSIS program.
The adviser and the student will analyze the appropriateness of the degree given the
student’s goals and career objectives, the degree’s requirements and the student’s
academic progress to date.
The BSIS program requires completion of the following:
A minimum of 24 credit hours after admission into the BSIS program,
including hours in which the student is currently enrolled
ASU’s General Education Requirements
Freshman English I and II with a grade of “C” or above
One semester of U.S. History or American Government
College Algebra, Pre-calculus or any higher level mathematics course
for which College Algebra is a prerequisite
A minimum of 18 credit hours in each of three areas of emphasis
a. The areas of emphasis may be selected from any
discipline in which ASU offers a major or a minor.
b. No more than two areas of emphasis may be selected
from any given department.
c. No more than 30 hours of courses from the College of
Business may be used to complete degree requirements
d. At least 12 of the credit hours in each area of emphasis
must be junior/senior level courses.
e. The student’s grade point average in each of these areas
must be 2.0 or above.
45 credit hours of junior/senior level courses after the accumulation of
30 credit hours
At least 32 credit hours in residence at ASU including 18 of the final
57 credit hours at accredited senior institution(s)
A minimum of 124 credit hours, no more than 30 of which may be
earned in the College of Business, from an accredited institution of
A 2.0 on all coursework at ASU and a 2.20 average on all coursework
presented for graduation.
BSIS majors must take part in a personal interview with a BSIS adviser each
semester in order to assess their progress towards the degree requirements and
to select appropriate courses for the subsequent semester.
