THE ROSE ART MUSEUM INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR BRANDEIS STUDENTS ACADEMIC YEAR 2007-2008 The Rose Art Museum offers a variety of internships to Brandeis University students, including both paid and course credit internships. The paid internships include the Starr and Warner Curatorial Internships (2). The internships for course credit include two education internships, one registrar internship, and if required by the exhibition program, one to two artist assistant internships each year. While all students are welcome to apply, priority will be given to Fine Arts concentrators. If you are interested in any of the following internships, and have questions that are not addressed in the internship descriptions, do not hesitate to contact The Rose Art Museum at 781.736.3434. An application form is at the end of this packet. Please feel free to photocopy it. All applications are due April 11, 2007. The Sherman and Jill Starr Curatorial Internship and the Lynn Warner Curatorial Internship These two internships are awarded to outstanding Juniors who are interested in exploring the potential of a curatorial career. Stipend: Hours: Purpose: Wage varies annually 10-15 hrs/per week throughout the academic year To introduce an exceptional Fine Art major to the curatorial and administrative duties of the museum profession. The Rose’s curator will supervise the intern. Work closely with the curator in implementing the exhibition and collection program. 50% of the intern's duties will be directed toward one project for which s/he will have substantial responsibility and 50% of the time will be spent on routine daily curatorial duties. The curator will assign a specific project based upon the needs of the museum and the particular interests of the intern. Training may include: research on exhibitions and collections; developing interpretive materials for exhibitions; reviewing unsolicited visual materials by artists; leading tours of exhibitions. Upcoming Seniors (Art History, Studio, and other majors from relevant disciplines preferred) who are interested in learning about the aspects of a curatorial career. Interested candidates should notify their faculty advisor of their interest in the position. A list of recommended nominees will be submitted to The Rose Art Museum by the faculty. In parallel, candidates should submit their application with a cover letter and résumé to the Rose Art Museum’s Director of Education, The Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, MS 069 PO Box 549110, Waltham, MA 02454-9110. Completed applications including résumé, cover letter, and faculty nomination must arrive at The Rose Art Museum no later than April 11, 2007 Fine Arts faculty will nominate no less than 2 and no more than 5 final candidates in March. A panel comprised of The Rose Art Museum curator, a member of The Rose Board of Overseers, a faculty member of the Fine Arts Department and a Starr family designee will interview the finalist candidates in April. Only finalists will receive interviews. Candidates will be selected based upon their skills and qualifications, and will be notified in May whether they have been selected. Qualified finalists may also be automatically considered as strong candidates for the internships for credit. The Rose’s director of education will supervise the interns. Work closely with the Director of Education, implementing the educational programs. A mid-semester partial draft and a final paper will be done for the end of the year. You should make a schedule to work at The Rose and stick to it as you would for any other class. Expectations include:    Assist with setting up the programming for upcoming exhibitions, including assisting with administrative and office responsibilities associated with creating and promoting an education program Prepare the Student Loan Collection annual exhibition, manage the collection and run the loan process. Work closely with docents and tour groups and assist with the administrative duties associated with tour registration. Prepare for and lead gallery talks for certain segments of the audience (a least one tour per semester). Assist with writing interpretative texts and other educational material. A mid-semester partial draft and a final paper will be done for the end of the year. You should make a schedule to work at The Rose and stick to it as you would for any other class. Expectations include:    Assist the Registrar with the management of the ongoing Permanent Collection Inventory and Digitization Project. Assist the Registrar with condition reports for incoming and outgoing loans Support the Registrar and Exhibitions Manager in the galleries during installation and deinstallation. Responsibilities will include general art handling and gallery preparation. Who is eligible: Upcoming Seniors who are Art History, Studio, and other majors from relevant disciplines who are interested in learning about the aspects of art collection management. Interested candidates should notify their faculty advisor that they are interested in the position. A list of nominees will be submitted to The Rose Art Museum by the faculty. Interested candidates should also send a cover letter/letter of intent and résumé to the attention of the Director of Education, The Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, MS 069 PO Box 549110, Waltham, MA 02454-9110. How to apply: Deadline: Selection Process: Number of interns: one Artist Assistant Internship for Credit FA 92 (internship) (92 A for the fall semester; 92 B for the spring semester) Stipend: Hours: Academic Credit, full course unit Two weeks in a row at the end of the Summer or Winter break. Final paper: study to finish installation diary and creation of work of art based on the experience. Work closely with an artist invited to create a work on site or site-related. Students will be involved in the conceptualization, and installation of a work. They will be involved in the process of creation and execution. Students will also be documenting the development of the work and create their own work based on their experience of the internship.       Who is eligible: How to apply: Assist an artist with installing his/her work. This might include tasks as diverse as gathering material together with the artist to creating under the supervision and with the instruction of the artist in residence. Guide the artist on campus Receive introductory instruction from the exhibition manager about using the museum workshop Write a documentary diary of the installation process and take digital photographs. This will lead to a document available for museum visitors to learn about the different steps taken by the artist and students. If feasible interns will be involved in gallery talk to share their experience. Create a work of their own based on and informed by the experience of the internship Duties: Preference given to Juniors and Senior Fine Art majors. Post-Bacs and other Studio Arts students will also be considered. Information about the visiting artist will be provided to the Fine Arts Faculty. Interested candidates should notify their faculty advisor that they are interested in the position. Faculty will base their selection of candidates on the needs and work of the artist in residence. A list of nominees will be submitted to The Rose Art Museum by the faculty. The final candidates will be selected jointly by The Rose Art Museum’s director and curator and the Studio Art faculty. Completed applications including résumé, cover letter, and faculty nomination must arrive at the Rose Art Museum no later than April 11, 2007 for both the Fall and Spring semester. Candidates will be selected based upon their skills and qualifications, and will be notified in May whether they have been selected.
