IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY Crawford County Extension
University Extension 35 South Main
Denison, IA 51442
Dear 4-H Families,
Welcome to 2009. 4-H members, this is also a good time to get started working on 4-H
projects. Winter time is a great time to take pictures—get a head start on your photography
exhibits for the county fair. If you have signed up for visual arts, do you like to draw or would
you rather work with needlecraft? These winter months are also a good time to practice drawing
or design an embroidery project and get started on crafting.
Maybe you signed up for foods and nutrition, this would be a good time to practice a new
recipe or learn more about the new food pyramid and plan a poster to educate others. If you are
interested in child development, offer to baby-sit for friends or neighbors and write up what you
learned about taking care of the children.
The months go by quickly and the 2009 Crawford County Fair will soon be here! Be
sure to use your time wisely so you are prepared.
County Extension Education Director
FROM THE DESK OF JAN HENNINGSEN – COUNTY YOUTH

the IKM School. If anyone would be interested in this please contact Jan @ 263-4697 or cell
269-6165 as soon as possible. We do have 13 youth signed up for IKM Clover Kids. Thank you
for your help with this matter.
Don’t forget to attend awards day on Sunday, January 11th at 2:00 p.m. at the Zion
Lutheran Parish Hall.
FAIR CHANGES FOR 2009
The fair dates for the 2009 fair have changed. The fair will officially start on
Wednesday, July 29th and the sale will be on Monday, August 3rd. There has been an extra day
added back onto the fair. The County Council is planning on having a dance on Sunday, August

HIXSON OPPORTUNITY AWARD INFORMATION
This is a reminder to high school seniors in Crawford County that we have information
for the Hixson Opportunity Award to Iowa State University. One scholarship will be awarded in
Crawford County. You can pick-up information at the Extension office.
It’s never too early to think about applying for scholarships. Don’t wait until they are
due, which is February 1st for the Iowa State ones. The Crawford County Fair Scholarship is due
April 1st. Forms can be picked up at the Extension office.
STATE PROJECT AWARDS
If you are a 9th – 12th grader, there are many opportunities available to you for recognition
awards or to represent Iowa on the state or national level. These opportunities include National
4-H Conference, National 4-H Congress, State 4-H Council, National Dairy Conference, and
State Project Awards. Start thinking about applying now, and call the Extension office if you
have any questions. These are due March 1st. Just ask Coletta about the National 4-H Congress
FSQA TRAINING AND TESTING
As you can see by the calendar in the back of the newsletter, dates have been set aside for
FSQA testing and training, so mark these dates on your calendar and make sure you get to one of
them. The dates for testing are May 6th, 13th, and 20th in the afternoon. Training will be held on
two Saturday’s in April and those are 4th and the 25th, they will be held at the Extension office
from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. If you can’t possible attend one of these testing or training please
call the Extension office and check with either Jan or Coletta to make other arrangements. All
species will require training and/or testing in order to show and sell your livestock. This
includes beef, swine, sheep, dairy cattle, dairy goats, meat kids, rabbits and poultry. Remember,
Cattleman Classic does not work for the younger members to qualify for FSQA. You must go to
training until you are 12 years old.
If you are under 12 years old, you have to go to training each year until you are 12. If
you attend the Cattleman’s Classic class and are 10-12 years old, you still must attend the
trainings at the Extension office. Then you can test out until you are 15 and then you can take
another test and test out until you are an adult. These tests will be given at the Extension office;
we have also set up two trainings for youth in the county. Make sure you do one or the other in
order to show and sell your livestock this year at the Crawford County fair. If you have any
questions, please call the Extension office for more information.
We have set the date for lamb weigh-in and it will be Saturday, May 2nd, at the Crawford
County Fairgrounds. The time will be 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. sharp.
