COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is a special cooperative education experience provided by MCC and the Omaha Community
Playhouse. Students work a minimum of 165 hours per quarter in conjunction with the Playhouse and its staff.
Students who successfully complete this course sequence receive an apprentice certificate.

COURSE PREREQUISITE (S):
None

RATIONALE:
To foster a close relationship with the theatre community, the theatre technology course will provide students
with a unique educational experience which can lead to a certificate through the Department of Labor, a
certificate through MCC, and an associate’s degree. Students will have hands on experience working as an
apprentice to a Journeyman-Sponsor and will work with professional artists and technicians in the field.

Publisher:   Broadway Press
Materials:   OSHA approved safety (steel toed) shoes, earplugs, and safety glasses. Multi-tipped screwdriver,
leather gloves, 25 foot tape measure, flashlight, calendar, phone, computer and internet access. Depending on
the trade, the apprentice may have some specialized tools for a specific department.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Each course will have specific benchmark skill sets and competencies as outlined in assessment sheets created
for each major, however general objectives follow

1. Demonstrate mastery of general worker competencies.

2. Demonstrate mastery of shop safety, construction methods, tool use and maintenance for craft-specific area.


3. Demonstrate the importance of carefully archiving and creating a basic portfolio, including resume and
photographs/drawings

4. Effectively explore a Senior Capstone Project by selecting a show; presenting a rationale, drawings, and
timeline.




TOPICAL UNIT OUTLINE/UNIT OBJECTIVES:
Demonstrate a mastery of skills associated with a specific major

   1. Demonstrate average scores on craft-specific skills, safety and work ethic expectations as defined in the
      Specific Work Skill Assessment Inventory of his or her specific craft area.
   2. Demonstrate above average skills defined on the General Work Skill Assessment Inventory.
   3. Demonstrate more responsibility in the shop as determined by Journeyman-Sponsor
   4. Effectively demonstrate skills, assist junior apprentices with tasks and take leadership roles when
      appropriate.
