Jesuit Football and
The Down Syndrome Guild of Dallas Buddy Walk
What is Jesuit Football? It is a powerful group of young men that can make a difference on and off the field
when they act as one team.
What is the DSG and the Buddy Walk? The DSG is a parent support group that for nearly 40 years has
provided accurate and current information and support for people with Down syndrome, their families and the
community. The Buddy Walk aims to promote awareness and inclusion of people with Down syndrome and to
raise money for research, education and advocacy programs. This will be the Dallas-area’s 13th annual Buddy
Walk, one of over 210 Buddy Walks nationwide. The Dallas Buddy Walk attracts more than 5000 participants
and is a fun-filled day of music, fun and fellowship. The Buddy Walk 2012 is Sunday, Nov.4, 11-3pm, at
Victory Plaza, by American Airlines Center. The actual “Walk” begins at 1pm., and is one mile.
Why is the Jesuit football program supporting the Buddy Walk? In the tradition of “Men for Others”, this
community service project offers an opportunity for the players to work together as a team beyond the playing
field. The football program has several buddies who are our biggest fans and have Down syndrome. The Buddy
Walk is our way of supporting them and all people with delays in intellectual development. This will be our 6th
year to support the Buddy Walk. We have raised over $90,000 for the Guild in the last 5 years. We also
volunteer at the Guild’s Bike Camp every summer, teaching people of all ages with Down syndrome how to
ride a bike.
How does a person register for the Jesuit Ranger Buddy Walk Team/volunteer to help at the event? All
Buddy Walk information is on the Jesuit Football Webpage. A person can join the Jesuit Offense or Jesuit
Defense Team. If you raise or donate a minimum of $25, you will receive a Buddy Walk t-shirt.
Is this just for football players? Absolutely not! We encourage the players to invite their families/friends to
register online. We always have lots of support from other Jesuit students, parents, and friends from Ursuline.
The Cheerleading Squad has been a great friend to the Guild by manning a face painting booth all day at the
Buddy Walk. Even if you don’t register in advance, all are welcome to join us that day!
Will the players/students get community service hours for their time? Yes! Students get hours for
registering online, getting sponsors and for coming out to the Walk on Nov. 4th. They can get additional hours
by helping set-up, manning the bounce houses, and cleaning-up after the event is over.
As a parent, how can I help? Lots of ways!
- Encourage your son to participate! Come walk with him!
- Support one of the teams (Jesuit Offense or Jesuit Defense) by making a tax-deductible donation to the
- Volunteer the day of the event. Contact Anne O’Brien at email@example.com to learn more about
** Please note the Walk is at a new venue this year –
