ASME St. Joseph Valley Section September 2008 Meeting
Tour of New Energy Corporation

On Tuesday, September 16, 2008 we will have a tour of the New Energy Corporation in
South Bend. New Energy has been in operation since the mid 1980’s. The primary
product is “fuel grade ethanol” produced by a dry mill process of the corn to remove the
starch followed by fermentation. They produce 85,000,000 gallons of ethanol per year.
A by-product of the ethanol production is DDGS or dried distillers grain with solubles.
DDGS has been a staple feed on dairy and beef cattle farms for several decades. New
Energy produces 265,000 tons of DDGS per year.
Another by-product of ethanol production is carbon dioxide gas. Carbon dioxide is used
in the carbonated beverage industry and in the production of dry ice for cooling and
refrigeration of food products. 150,000 – 170,000 tons of carbon dioxide is produced per
This will be a most interesting tour. There will be a fair amount of walking all of which is
outdoors. So wear comfortable walking shoes. “Open toe” shoes are not allowed. New
Energy will supply hard hats and safety glasses.
To kick-off this first meeting of our new year, the ASME St. Joseph Valley Section will
buy dinner for all attendees.
