The following guidelines govern the internship program. You are expected to be in your field internship during the entire semester. 1. The field internship is optional. 2. The field internship is restricted to the student's senior year. The Field Internship Director may grant permission to other students. 3. The field internship is individualized for each student. 4. The field internship work should be done in an area where the student has no previous work experience. 5. Any additional expense incurred as a result of field work is the responsibility of the student. 6. Students may not make contacts with agencies for the purpose of establishing a program. 7. Enrollment in other classes (in excess of 12 credits) is discouraged while a student is doing their field internship. 8. It is required that a memorandum of understanding exist between the University and the agency. 9. It is desirable that the student obtain liability insurance. 10. It is required that the student sign a liability waiver for FIU. It will be the prerogative of the participating agency to ask the student to sign a liability waiver. 11. The student should be making adequate progress toward degree completion before being accepted into the field internship. 12. Arrest and conviction records, disciplinary action, physical defects or similar conditions may bar a student from certain agencies, based on agency criteria. 13. Enrollment is limited to Public Administration majors. The Field Internship Director may grant permission to other students. 14. The requirements to earn credit in this course are: a. Evaluation of the student by the Coordinator of the Agency where the student is placed, with the recommendation that credit will be either granted or not granted. b. The Student’s evaluation of the field internship submitted to the Field Internship Director two weeks before the internship period is over. This evaluation should cover the following items: 1. A description of the agency (purpose, function, goal, type of services provided, etc.) 2. A description of the student’s role in the Agency as an observer. Roles may vary depending on the placement agency. 3. Type of assignments given and learning experiences. 4. Quality and quantity of supervision received (individual or group supervision, fixed time to meet with the Coordinator of Agency Internship, etc.) 5. A research topic that is discussed and approved by the Director. c. The Field Internship Director will be available to meet with the students on an individual basis as needed. He will also have a meeting with the students as a group, before the placement starts and at the end of it. d. The Field Internship Director, based on the above mentioned criteria, will decide if the student is receiving credit for this course. Grade to be assigned according to course requirements (see course syllabus). 15. The Field Internship Director will use the following criteria to select the students that participate in the program: a. Individual student program needs. b. Preference will be given to students with higher grade point averages. 16. Students are allowed to be absent two days during the field internship under the following conditions: a. Personal illness b. Emergency in the student's immediate family. 17. No credit will be granted for any non-academic life experiences. 18. The carrying of firearms is strictly prohibited while participating in the field internship. 19. All students who would like to participate in the field internship program must complete the application. The completed application must be received by an academic advisor by the end of the third week of the term prior to student's participation in the field internship. Applications received afterwards will be honored if space is available. 20. This program will not require the Coordinator of Field Placement, in any given agency, to have any specific academic background. VII.
