SAMPLE LETTER TO STATE LEGISLATOR OR GOVERNOR
The Honorable (full name)
Governor of [STATE]
Dear Governor (LAST NAME):
As the country struggles to identify viable solutions to our collective economic, environmental
and energy futures, [STATE] has the opportunity to leverage an abundant resource that we are
literally letting fly away. Waste heat from our state’s large industrial base can be harnessed to
produce emission-free electricity, saving [STATE] industries millions of dollars, and generating a
clean homegrown energy supply.
Recent estimates using data published by the Department of Energy report that enough waste
heat to generate 10 GW of electricity is lost annually as a byproduct of our industrial, oil and
gas, and pipeline processes. This is enough energy to power approximately 10 million American
homes each year. In addition to adding more domestic emission-free electricity to the grid, fully
developing this market in the United States can generate 160,000 jobs across the country, $3
billion in savings for industrial users, and a CO2 reduction of 54 million short tons per year.
Since harnessing waste heat to generate power can produce the same product as traditional
renewables like wind and solar, 11 states (Louisiana, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Michigan,
North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Indiana and West Virginia) already recognize it
within their renewable energy standards. California has included waste heat in its Self-
Generation Incentive Program (SGIP). [STATE] should take this step and move to make this
possibility a reality and put [STATE RESIDENTS] back to work, leading a new, cleaner industrial
I urge you to support [STATE]’s manufacturers by offering parity to waste heat as with other
sources of emission free electricity.
