                                             museum was dedicated to 'all of France's
                                             glories'. Therefore only victories are depicted,
                                             not defeats.

                                             Trianon-sous-Bois
                                             Since the days of president Charles de Gaulle,
                                             one lateral wing of the Trianon has been
                                             reserved for the French head of state.

                                             The Garden
                                             In order to create her landscape garden, Marie-
                                             Antoinette changed everything. The furious Duc
                                             de Croÿ exclaimed in 1780 that 'the large green-
                                             house [the most costly and scholarly in Europe]
                                             was replaced by tall mountains, a large rock,
                                             and a stream that cost so much money.'
                                             Between 1776 and 1783 architect Richard
                                             Mique built her a Chinese tilting ring, a Temple
                                             of Love, the Rock Pavilion, a theatre, and then
                                             the Hamlet. Numerous receptions and
                                             nocturnal celebrations restored to the Petit
                                             Trianon the spirit of the festivities that marked
                                             the early years of Versailles.
