SUBJECT: Pay For Foreign Language Interpreters
This is a reminder and update of the memo dated April 26, 2001, sent by Judge Robert H. Hobgood, then Director of
the Administrative Office of the Courts, requesting that non-certified Spanish interpreters be paid $25.00 an hour
and AOC State Certified Spanish interpreters be paid $35.00 an hour.
Unfortunately, our budget does not allow for any increase in these rates.
The statutes governing interpreter compensation provide that the presiding local court official determines
the interpreter’s compensation. I am requesting that judges, exercising their discretion, limit Spanish
interpreter fees to $25.00 an hour for non-State certified interpreters and $35.00 an hour for State certified
interpreters. A list of those currently certified is located on our web site at
Certified interpreters should be paid more because they have passed a rigorous exam and have met the
criteria as set out in our State Guidelines.
The only circumstances to commandeer a higher rate compensation would be the following:
The interpreter appeared after normal working hours.
The case involved an esoteric language for which interpreters are difficult to locate.
This memorandum is not intended to cover sign language interpreters and similar accommodations for persons who
are deaf or hard of hearing. The fee for sign language interpreters therefore should continue to be whatever the local
judge believes is appropriate.
