Ticket-Out-the-Door is a strategy used mostly for quick formative assessments after a
day’s lesson. These quickly check the progress and understanding of the material among
students. In addition, a Ticket-Out-the-Door is an ideal way to assess what students
learned as well as what the teacher needs to address again in class. A Ticket-Out-the-Door
can range from short questions about what students learned to questions about how the
day’s lesson went. Either way students are providing the teacher with feedback while
being assessed formatively.

 Learning styles addressed:
-Visual
-Kinesthetic

Benefits:
-Great way to formatively assess students and their understanding of the day’s lesson
-Quickly identifies what the students learned and what the teacher needs to address again
-Simple and easy to create
-Teachers and students can identify the major aspects of the daily lessons

Drawbacks:
-The ticket out the door is not an extensive assessment
-This assessment is dependent of student feedback and students may not give enough
explanation
-Limited time to complete the ticket out the door for student
Assessment of Learning:
TOTD can be used as a formative assessment of the day’s lesson.
The TOTD can also be used as a self assessment for the teacher.

Classroom management considerations:
-Teacher will stand at the door so he or she is able to collect the paper from each student
before they leave.
-Allow enough time at the end of class for the ticket out the door to be completed by the
students

Implementation in content area (how, why, etc.):

After the day’s lesson, the teacher will leave the at least the last five minutes of class to
give the students the TOTD. Students will be asked to answer questions and/or add
comments regarding the day’s lesson. For example, students might be asked to explain
ideas presented in class or comment on what they learned in class. The teacher will be
looking for students to present their knowledge learned from that day, while checking
his/her teaching for the day.

Ask these types of questions on the Ticket-Out-The-Door:

What are three characteristics or parts of…
In what other ways might we show or illustrate the point that….
    How is ….. similar to/different from… (Marzano comparisons)
In what other ways might this problem/situation have been addressed?
What are the three big ideas/concepts/ morals to be learned from this situation?
Give three examples of how …. contributed to the situation.
What is wrong with this statement? (Provide a false statement with at least three
    details.)
    What might happen if….
What criteria would you use to judge or evaluate this event?
    What evidence supports…
How might you confirm/prove the following statement? (Provide a statement.)
How might this be viewed from the perspective of ….?
What alternatives should have/could have been considered?
    What did you learn today?
What do you think about …..?
What are three things you would share with your younger brother about this topic?

Learning Styles Addressed
Verbal (linguistic) & Social (interpersonal), Physical (kinesthetic).
Benefits
Allowing students to show off what they remember and reinforce their learning for the
day. Listening to the other students will also help them remember more than just their
own ticket!
Drawbacks
None. It is just important to make sure that everyone gets their say or ask them to tell
you when they arrive the next day. They actually do!
Assessment of Learning
Daily formative assessment. A good way to check for understanding.
Classroom Management considerations
Keeping an eye on the excitable students is necessary here, as some might want to blurt
Implementation in content area
    • ALL content areas should be using something to check for understanding at the
       end of each class.

Although many teachers use the method
displayed here, I prefer the verbal ticket
out of the door. During the last five minutes
of the class, I give the first ticket, and tell
students that they can’t repeat mine or their
neighbors ticket. Students love it! You
should see those hands go up!
