COURSE OVERVIEW:
The percussion class is a process-oriented group, which provides an opportunity for select
students to utilize interactive musical skills in a percussion ensemble. While promoting the
advancement of percussion music of artistic and historical significance, it reinforces the musical
and technical skills taught in class and develops the application of those skills. This course
advances the growth of the student’s overall musicianship and promotes lifelong activity in
music.
The fall semester will be heavily marching percussion based. We will work specifically on our
competition music along with exercises and other music to help improve our marching percussion
section.
The spring semester will be divided into marching percussion and concert percussion units.

CORE LEARNING GOALS AND EXPECTATIONS:
The student will demonstrate the ability to perceive, perform, and respond to music.
        1. The student will demonstrate music reading and sight-reading skills.
        2. The student will identify elements of music, including melody, rhythm, harmony,
            form, texture, expressive devices, and tension/release
        3. The student will analyze aural examples of varied repertoire of music, representing
            diverse genres and cultures, and describe uses of the elements of music.
        4. The student will interpret percussion music more intelligently leading to expressive
            performance.
        5. Private lessons are not required but are highly recommended.

GRADING PROCEDURES:
Class Participation/Written Work = 25%           Rehearsals (homework) = 20%
Quizzes, Performance             = 25%           Concert               = 30%
Assessments                        50%                                   50%        = 100%

MATERIALS NEEDED:
    1. Pad and sticks (marching and concert sticks for marching band students)
    2. Music folder. (NO SHARING MUSIC!!) Be responsible!
    3. 3-Ring Binder with dividers.
    4. Pencil
    5. Method Book: Intermediate Snare Drum Studies- Mitchell Peters. *You can purchase
       this at Music & Arts or online.
    6. Hearing protection is expected at all times while playing marching band music
       inside!

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES:
     1. Arrive to class and be seated with all materials by the ringing of the late bell.
     2. Observe silence during classroom instruction.
     3. React to instructions positively and quickly.
     4. Respect the teacher and fellow classmates.
        5. Practice good posture and always be alert.
        6. Practice to be great! Practice the way you intend to perform.
        7. Refrain from eating and chewing gum. Both are prohibited. Water in clear bottles
           only is allowed.
        8. Improper use or destruction of equipment will NOT BE TOLERATED and an
           immediate administrative referral will be given.
        9. Cell phones are to be out of sight and turned off at all times during the class!!


OTHER INFORMATION:
Attendance at all performances and rehearsals is mandatory! Any exceptions must be made
with the director in advance by completing the appropriate paper work. Unexcused absences may
result in dismissal from the performing group and/or a reduction in class grade. In the event of an
excused absence from a scheduled rehearsal or performance an alternate assignment will be
given.

A yearly Performance Arts Fee of $60 ($30 per semester) per student is requested from all
students enrolled in any music class.
Marching Band members pay only the second semester ($30) performance arts fee.
