									Wildcat Families,
Author Helen Frost visits PISD middle schools

The librarians from Westview Middle School, Park Crest Middle School and Dessau Middle
School arranged for author Helen Frost from Fort Wayne, Indiana to visit with the students on
each campus. Ms. Frost presented to Westview Middle School on Wednesday, March 31, 2010.

Ms. Frost has written several books for young people including Diamond Willow, one of the
selections on this year’s Texas Lone Star Reading list.

Written in verse, the book tells the story of Willow, a young girl living in a remote area of
Alaska. When her beloved dog, Roxy, is blinded in an accident that is partly her fault, her
parents want to put the dog down. Willow sets out on a dangerous journey to take Roxy to her
grandparents’ cabin and they are caught in a raging blizzard.

Ms. Frost discussed the creation of this book as well as her writing process. After the
presentation, students were given time to get autographs, to take group pictures, and to ask
individual questions one on one with the author, and to take group pictures.

CONSTRUCTION NEXT DOOR
By now you have noticed that the northeast side of the schools vacant lot is under construction.
A Montessori school is being built and scheduled to open in August of 2010. It is important to
ensure that we are careful when exiting and entering the parking lot and that students stay away
from that property due to the heavy machinery that is located on the property. Thank you for
keeping our students safe and out of harms way.

blacks...) at the games. Please contact us if you're interested (or even if you're thinking about
