4. CAPTAIN’S REPORT
It seems a long time ago now but we held The County Lunch on March 7th at the Sculpture
Gallery and we had a really super lunch and the atmosphere was really relaxed and
everyone enjoyed the day. Despite our official speaker not being able to make the lunch the
combination of Pat Pearce from the charity and our very own President giving us an insight
into life with Hamish as a past Captain of the R&A it proved to be a huge success so my
thanks to Carol for coming to our rescue.
It was disappointing that several of the clubs weren’t represented at the Lunch but my
thanks for the generosity of the members that attended and bought raffle tickets and who
made bids for green fees in the silent auction. We raised just over £2000.00 which was an
amazing amount. 13 clubs sent green fee vouchers.
I have attended a couple of the junior training sessions, the par 3 championships at
                                                  -3-
Wycombe Heights , the BB&O team championships at Sunningdale ladies, the Spring
meeting at Richings Park and the BB&O championships at Denham where our girls swept
the board. I have been very impressed with the standard of the girls so early in the season.
Well done again to Anne for a great training program.
I had another get together for all the squads and we had 16 players who again seemed to
enjoy the practice. We had a 1st team practice match against Middlesex which we won and it
was good to see some possible pairings emerging. My thanks to Mentmore for allowing the
use of the course for this match and for the practice sessions.
I hope to get a few practice sessions in prior to CMW for the 1st team squad. Although the
girls now know Mentmore fairly well the course has been lengthened for the week and they
need to become familiar with the changed yardages.
I have had the chance to go along to a few of the 2nd team matches and even played in a
couple. My thanks to Debbie for running these matches. I also had the pleasure of playing
in one of the Seniors matches which was unfortunately played in awful conditions but our
Senior ladies seem to be doing very well and my thanks also to Teddy for her continued
hard work in her job as seniors’ Captain.
Carol and I attended the Winter Foursomes final at Mentmore between Julia Gallagher and
Jane Wetherall of Woburn and Judith Arnold and Gail Sharp of Gerrards Cross. It was a
good match with Julia and Jane winning after being runners up last year. Our thanks to
Janet for organising the match.
Sadly at the end of March Lynda our County secretary resigned due to ill health. We were
obviously really sad to see her go. Lynda has done a huge amount of work for the County
and we wish her well in her retirement from County. Helen Mines who was Secretary before
Lynda has now been co-opted on to the committee and we thank her for coming to the
rescue.
Prior to Helen coming back on to the committee we hosted the annual Vice Captains
meeting at Gerrards Cross and despite not having any secretarial back up we managed to
have a very good meeting. My thanks to Karen for sorting out the invitations to the Vice
Captains and for updating all the addresses.
Karen had also taken over the diary to co-ordinate the dates for 2013. My thanks again to
my Vice Captain!
With regard to all the contact details please do always send any changes through to Helen.
We really do need to have the correct information on your club officials if we are to be
efficient.
We held the County Championships at Harewood Downs on the 11th, 12th and 13th May.
We were so lucky with the weather and managed to complete the weekend without any rain
at all. Despite the dry weather the conditions were quite difficult with very high winds on the
Friday. The senior’s championship which was played over just 18 holes was won by Anne
Bridges and the Intermediate winner was Clara Leathers. In the last 16 qualifiers we had 6
juniors and 2 intermediates.
We had some excellent matches on the Saturday and then the Semi-finals on the Sunday.
The first one was between Charlotte West of Harewood Downs and Denise Goodacre from
Lambourne. This match was very close and finished with Denise as victor on the 18th hole.
The other semi-final was between Julia Gallagher of Woburn and Evie Ing from
Ellesborough. This was again a very close match and it didn’t finish until the 19th where Evie
triumphed.
The final between Evie and Denise was again very close and with never more than a hole in
it on the back nine. Denise levelled the match on the 17th so again the match came down the
18th with Evie managing to win with a par and become our County Champion.
It was a great weekend and our thanks go to Harewood for allowing the use of the course
and to all the members that helped out throughout the weekend.
It was the first Championship that Sally our competition secretary had organised and with
the help of Janet and Helen everything went without a hitch. Well done everyone on a great
event.

                                              -4-
Following the Championship the County Squad was named. We have a great team and I
know they will do us proud at County Match Week. The squad are:
Gemma Dryburgh, Zoe Fitz Costa, Julia Gallagher, Denise Goodacre, Steph Gough, Evie
Ing, Lydia Johnston, Alice Kozlowski, Clara Leathers, Susanna Mitterer, Luan Skeates and
     Charlotte West.
I do hope as many of you as possible will support us at Mentmore from the 18th – 22nd June.

5. EXECUTIVE REPORTS

     PRESIDENT – CAROL RITCHIE
There has been much activity on the County scene since our last Delegates’ meeting. I have
made personal appearances at the following events. The Bucks’ Junior Par 3 competition at
Wycombe Heights, the BB&O Junior Team Stableford at Sunningdale Ladies, when
husband Hamish accompanied me ,the Bucks Junior Spring Meeting and the BB&O Junior
     Championship.
I attended the Bucks Lady Captains’ AGM with Sue Lee when we received a cheque for the
County Juniors, an annual donation much appreciated.
Many of you may remember that I was also present at the County Lunch.
I was treated to a feast of outstanding golf in the Final of the Winter Foursomes at
     Mentmore.
The 2nd Team matches have been a trial of endurance in the main battling wind, rain, sleet
and bitter chill. I’ve travelled far and wide to support the girls at Lambourne, Calcot Park,
Buckingham, Harleyford, Frilford heath and Kingsthorpe.
Fortunately we were lucky with the County Championship conditions 10 days ago at
Harewood Downs where I enjoyed watching exciting matches.
The Exec continues to do business and much time has been spent in finalising the
     preparations for County Match Week.
The details of the events and the results will be in reports by other members of the Exec.
I have accepted an invitation to attend a Presidents’ Day at Woodhall Spa the home of
England Golf, next Monday and Tuesday. I hope to do some research on the pros and cons
of merging B, B and O. If, in fact, all counties agree to combine forces in line with the men,
many details will have to be discussed and various people consulted before we reach the
starting blocks. Since the EGU and EWGA are evolving only gradually as England Golf I feel
that any proposed merger will take a considerable time to develop.

VICE-CAPTAIN – KAREN PLATT (READ BY SUE LEE)
Many apologies for not being able to make the Delegates Meeting.
I have little to report except a plea from the BB&O steering Group to please urge your clubs
to respond and complete the Golf Club Questionnaire for 2012 from England Golf. Only 7
Clubs in Bucks have completed the report so far.

     JUNIOR CO-ORDINATOR – GILLY BREWER
No report as all junior information has been covered in the Captain’s report.
Sue Lee reported that there will be two vacancies on the junior committee in October,
competitions secretary and a minute taker. If anyone is interested, please talk to Gilly.

     ACTING 2ND TEAM CAPTAIN – DEBBIE POLLARD-BARNES
No report. Sue Lee asked all delegates to let Debbie know of any improving golfers who

                                                   -5-
may be eligible for the second team (handicap 12 and below).

4. County Championships
The final details are still being worked through, but we should have made a small surplus on
running the County Championships this year.
We will be able to present the final accounts at the next Delegates meeting.
We had 27 entries into the main competition and 15 entries into the senior competition.

HANDICAP ADVISOR – CHRISTINE BISHOP
I have had a very busy and enjoyable time since the last Delegate’s Meeting giving CONGU
and Rules Seminars to clubs in Buckinghamshire. The Vice Captains were made aware of
these seminars and I expect to be running more later in the year and next year.
I was required to contact all the Handicap Secretaries to direct them to ignore cards brought
back by juniors who competed in non-qualifying BB&O events. The juniors had been told to
inform their club that they should be cut on these cards but this was not possible under
CONGU regulations. We are progressing this matter with the BB&O and will be
encouraging them to make their junior competitions qualifiers and so avoid any under or

                                             -7-
over handicapping in the future.
I am always available to answer queries on rules or handicapping matters from our clubs
and these continue to be a source of interest especially when I have to research the answer
or consult a higher authority. I am building a good library of reference material.
Julie Cooper (Beaconsfield) asked what will be happening to EWGA medals in 2013. CB
and XM replied that there is no information available yet.
Maureen Brooker (Farnham Park) said that FP had not received a new Congu manual. CB
suggested that she contact Congu directly.

SENIORS CAPTAIN – TEDDY BEVAN
We have played two league matches so far this season, and one friendly.
The first league match was played away at Weybrook Park, Basingstoke. Buckinghamshire
seniors v Hampshire Seniors - Buckinghamshire won 5 and 2.
Last week we played a friendly match against the Berkshire Vets at East Berkshire - the
format was 4BBB off three quarters handicap - the Vets were not too happy about playing
off scratch last year. The match was halved - the course was lovely, the weather was not!
On Monday 21st May we had our second league match against Berkshire Seniors - this was
played at Magnolia Park. Berkshire were the winners of the league last year, and they
played extremely well this year, and beat the Buckinghamshire seniors 6/1. Their team was
very strong - their highest handicapper was 6! Each match was very tight, and thoroughly
enjoyed by both teams.
We have two more league matches - one against Hertfordshire away and the second one at
Mentmore against Oxfordshire.
Buckinghamshire seniors matches are for ladies over the age of 50, with a handicap of 14 or
less - please ask any members in your clubs who may like to play for Buckinghamshire to
contact me.
We have our Autumn Cup for ladies over 60, this is a threeball alliance - again held at
Oakland Park on Wednesday 19th September. I would like the delegates to encourage their
members in this category to support the day, as it was a great success last year. Details
can be found in the BCLGA handbook, or on the BCLGA website.

COUNTY TRAINING OFFICER – ANNE BRIDGES
Elite Juniors
At our training session for the elite juniors in February we included some technical work
which involved the girls having their swings videoed. This was followed with an activity to
simulate the girls in a pressure game situation and finally with some work on putting. In
March they worked on shots for specific conditions, particularly playing shots into the wind
(low draws), the girls seemed to really enjoy this and were hitting some fantastic shots. We
then played the Par 3 course putting these shots into practice. We were due to have a
session in April at Mentmore, but the course was closed due to the rain. One further
practice game will be held at Mentmore next weekend as part of their preparation for the
junior county championship.
EWGA meeting
I also attended a meeting at EWGA offices in March which is held for the Junior Organisers
of the Midland South and Midland North region. It is a useful way of hearing what goes on
in other counties and also gives the 6 counties in our region (Midland South) the opportunity
of discussing any issues that may arise.

                                             -8-
JOINT COMPETITIONS SECRETARY – JANET BEAL
(K/O’S, INTERCLUB FOURSOMES & BUCKS SHIELD)
     Winter Foursomes
The final was played on 29th March on the Rothschild course at Mentmore. It was a lovely
sunny day (remember it, before the rain set in for the whole of April), and Jane Wetherall &
Julia Gallagher from Woburn (last year’s runners up) played some excellent golf to beat Gail
Sharp & Judith Arnold from Gerrards Cross. Jane and Julia were approximately three over
     par when they won.
     Bucks Shield
We are now in the second round, but no matches have yet been played. Well done to all
     the first round winners.
I know that finding tee times for a Bucks Shield match can be quite difficult, especially at
weekends and other busy times, but please can team captains emphasise to their clubs that
this is a very important event and ask that that the matches are not shoehorned in amongst
     lots of four balls.
The Bucks Shield semi-finals and finals will be held at Stoke Park on Wednesday 29th
     August.
     Summer Knockouts
The final entry numbers were as follows:
      Competition 2012 Entries 2011 Entries 2010 Entries
      Champion of 23 21 24
      Champions
      Challenge Cup 29 33 34
      Rose Bowl 15 26 32
      Summer Greensomes 48 45 40
All of the competitions are in the second round, except for the Rose Bowl which still has a
few first round matches to be played.
I would be grateful for any feedback on why the Challenge Cup and Rose Bowl do not seem
     to be very popular.

     this year.

This will be held on Friday 12th October at Burnham Beeches. Entry forms will be sent out to

8. COUNTY MATCH WEEK
Buckinghamshire are hosting the County Match Week at Mentmore this year. Practice day
is Sunday 17th June and the matches run from Monday 18th to Friday 22nd.
A notice has been sent to delegates asking for volunteers to caddy for both Bucks girls and
the other counties, mainly in the afternoon singles matches. Mentmore members are
already volunteering for lots of jobs such as ball spotting, hostess, reception etc, and we
need other ladies to help as caddies. You are just there as support and will see some good
golf. Please can you put the notice up and try to get some volunteers.
Caddies should wear their club colours if they are caddying for other counties (red if you are
caddying for Bucks). You will get a sandwich lunch.
Clubs are also asked to send good luck cards to the Bucks team; we want our table to be
the best from all the counties.
