                           Invitation to Participate

To: Assistant Superintendants
Directors of Curriculum and Instructional Services
Principals of Elementary and Middle Schools

From: Orange County Mathematics Council

We are proud to announce the seventeenth annual Orange County Mathematics Field
Day sponsored by the Orange County Mathematics Council, the California Mathematics
Council, and the Orange County Department of Education. We will hold two events
again this year, one for those schools in the northern half of the county, at El Modena
High School on Saturday, May 9, 2009, and one for those schools in the southern half of
the county at Capistrano Valley High School on Saturday, May 16, 2009.

The purpose of the Orange County Mathematics Field Day is to support rigorous
mathematics as called for in the California Mathematics Framework. The day is
intended to be an exciting and thought-provoking adventure in mathematics for
students in grades four through six. The field day offers students an opportunity to
demonstrate their ability to reason, communicate, and problem solve in cooperative
groups. As stated in the National Teachers of Mathematics’ Curriculum and Evaluation
Standards, mathematics is reasoning, communication, connections, and problem
solving. It should be viewed as a dynamic subject where students learn by doing. In
this spirit, the day is structured to make mathematics competition fun, informative, and
worthwhile.

If students and teachers in your school want to participate, please complete our
enclosed registration forms.
       • Each participating school may send a team of four students from each of
              grades 4, 5, and 6.
       • On the day of the competition, each team must have a separate adult
available who will be assigned as a proctor in one of the sessions.
       • The registration form and a fee of $80 per team (check or p.o. made out to
OCMC) will be due by March 6, 2009.

              participate in the competition.
       • An information packet and sample questions will be mailed to all
registered schools upon receipt of the registration form.
