1. The tables in this download have been produced according the the Foundation for the Study of Infant Death's (FSID)
definition of unexpected and unexplained infant deaths that were referred to a coroner.

Sudden infant deaths include code R95 'Sudden infant death syndrome') include any
2. Unexplaineddeaths (ICD–10 both sudden infant deaths and unascertained deaths. mention of ‘sudden infant death’, ‘cot
death’, ‘SIDS’, ‘crib death’, or another similar term anywhere on the death certificate mortality') include cases where the only
Unascertained deaths (ICD-10 code R99 'other ill-defined and unspecified causes of
mention on the death certificate is unascertained death
3. From the linked records, information about parents that was collected at birth registration can be used for analysis of the
data according to certain risk factors including birthweight, mother's age at birth of child, mother's country of birth, marital
status and parity, and father's socio-economic status based on his occupation.
4. The majority of unexplained deaths are certified by a coroner, either with or without an inquest, and therefore there can be
some delay between death and registration. This report is based on data available up to 29 May 2012 and figures for 2010 are
provisional.

5. Definitions used in the tables.
Infant deaths (under 1 year) at various ages are defined as:
Stillbirth - born after 24 or more weeks completed gestation and which did not, at any time, breathe or show signs of
life
Early neonatal - deaths under 7 days
Perinatal - stillbirths and early neonatal deaths
Neonatal – deaths under 28 days
Postneonatal – deaths between 28 days and 1 year.

Parity – the number of total births a woman has had previously. (Only recorded for married women).

Region - The areas previously referred to as Government Office Regions (GORs) are now designated as 'regions' for statistical
purposes only. GORs were abolished on 31st March 2011 as part of the Government Comprehensive Spending Review.
NS-SEC - Since 2001 the National Statistics Socio-economic Classification (NS-SEC) has been used for all official statistics
and surveys. It replaced Social Class based on Occupation (SC, formerly Registrar General's Social Class) and Socio-
economic Groups (SEG). It an occupationally based classification but has rules to provide coverage of the whole adult
6. Rates: Neonatal, postneonatal and infant mortality rates are calculated as the number of deaths per thousand live births.
Perinatal mortality rates are calculated as the number of deaths per thousand births (live and still). Since rates are calculated
per thousand births it allows useful comparisons to be made between years, areas or groups. However, where there are small
counts of deaths then comparison of rates between groups should still be interpreted with caution. Rates are not produced for
counts of deaths below 3 denotyed by (:); rates calculated for counts between 3 and 19 are distinguished by italics as a
7. Since 1975, ONS (formerly OPCS) has obtained the birthweight of a baby from information provided to the Registrar of
Births and Deaths by the local health services. Since 2007, with the introduction of the Registration Online system for
registering births and deaths in some districts, ONS has obtained the birthweight for these babies from the corresponding NHS
