Finding Images Finding Images among the Library's eResources These resources are licensed and made available through the library catalog and eResources. The images found in these sites are available for educational use on campus, as outlined within each database licensing agreement. For assistance with using or creating digital images, consult the Technology Resources, or contact Computing Help at help@dartmouth.edu. The Grove dictionary of art online (Catalog Record) Includes the Bridgeman Library, a resource for more then 30,000 images in the fine arts and photography. These images may be searched by choosing the Then choose Art Image Collections. Most of these collections are commercial vendors, who offer free access to thumbnail images, and sometimes data about the image. Usually, you will need to contact the collection to gain access or permission to use a larger scale image. You can either right click on the image you want to save to your desk top PC, or simply drag and drop it on your Mac desktop ARTSTOR (Catalog Record) ArtStor is a database of more than 300,000 images from different times, cultures, and disciplines. The combination of images, data, and texts provides comprehensive art-related teaching, learning, and researching capabilities. Can view and analyze images through features such as zooming and panning. *note that ArtStor will schedule online training sessions for individual users http://artstor.webex.com , and is also available for consultation at userservices@artstor.org. The main search box is a simple, Google style search. Advanced Search options are also available from the menu bar, to help refine your searches. Small images can be saved directly to your document or desktop. Larger images can be saved to folders created in ArtStor, or can saved to be viewed with the downloadable image viewer. Hood Museum of Art Collection (Catalog Record) Comprising nearly 60,000 works of art and artifacts from a broad range of cultures and historical periods, the permanent collection of the Hood Museum of Art represents a remarkable cultural and educational asset for both Dartmouth College and the communities of the Upper Valley region of Vermont and New Hampshire. Dartmouth Photographic Records Catalog Search the photographic images in the Dartmouth College Archive & Special Collection. New York times ProQuest historical newspapers. (Catalog Record) This database offers full-page-images and article images from the New York times from its first issue in 1851 to three years before the current date. The collection includes digital reproductions of every page from every issue, cover to cover, in downloadable PDF files. Finding Images on the Web Images may be found in a variety of formats on publicly accessible web sites. Copyright restrictions may apply to these images, and the web master of a given site may need to be consulted when images are used. Many large and small museums have excellent web sites, which display images from their collections, as well as information about the images, and contacts for more assistance. These sites can be a good starting point when looking for images, and the library also has many lavishly illustrated catalogs available for research as well. AccuNet/AP photo archive (Catalog Record) Features state, regional and national photos from North America, as well as the best of the international photo report. New York Public Library Picture Collection The Picture Collection Online is an image resource site for those who seek knowledge and inspiration from visual materials. It is a collection of 30,000 digitized images from books, magazines and newspapers as well as original photographs, prints and postcards, mostly created before 1923. National Gallery of Art The National Gallery of Art houses one of the finest collections in the world illustrating major achievements in painting, sculpture, decorative arts, and works on paper from the Middle Ages to the present. More than 5,600 objects from our collection are now available online Metropolitan Museum of Art In formation since 1870, the Metropolitan Museum's collection now contains more than two million works of art from all points of the compass, ancient through modern times. About 6,500 objects highlights from each of the Museum's curatorial departments as well as the entire Department of European Paintings and the entire Department of American Paintings and Sculpture can be accessed online. Museum of Fine Arts Boston With a collection of 450,000 objects, the MFA owns some of the most rare and important artistic treasures in the world. At every turn, you ll find breathtaking works of art, from masters of American painting to the icons of Impressionism, from exquisite Asian scrolls to Egyptian mummies. The Louvre Museum The Musee du Louvre houses 35,000 works of art drawn from eight departments, displayed in over 60,000 square meters of exhibition space dedicated to the permanent collections. These images are made available for educational purposes Google Image Seach Discover Islamic Art Provides images, which can be enlarged and "explored" using mouse and cursor, of over 1200 items, including illustrated and illuminated manuscripts. Extensive catalogue details and documentation are provided for each piece. They are supplied by museums in Algeria,Egypt, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Morocco, Palestine, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey and UK. Library of Congress - American Memory Project American Memory provides free and open access through the Internet to written and spoken words, sound recordings, still and moving images, prints, maps, and sheet music that document the American experience.
