Sitting on a chair all day in school can make anyone want to move around. So, more and
more teachers are letting students have a ball. By sitting on exercise balls instead of
chairs, teachers find students' posture (姿势) and attention improve.
Dottie Pownall, a fifth-grade teacher in West Virginia, USA, has been using balls as
chairs since December 2008. "The students love them", she says. Pownall took a survey
of her students. She found that 80% of the students thought sitting on the balls helped
them pay more attention to what they were learning.
The teacher, Pisa Witt, felt so strongly about the use of balls as chairs, she started Witt
Fitt. This company encourages the use of the balls. And the company educates not only
teachers but also students on how to use them. "Our products are used in 24 states,
three provinces in Canada, Puerto Rico ('波多黎各) and Japan," says Witt. "Research
shows that sitting on the balls makes them sit up straighter. You can slouch (低头垂肩地
坐) on a ball," says Witt, "but it feels awful." Because the students are moving, their
blood (血液) increases. That carries more oxygen (氧气 to the brain (大脑), so the kids
have more energy and can focus longer.
"Furthermore, they're fun." says Pownali.

Beautiful scenes of paradise (乐园), wild animals, silly pictures — you can find them
all in one place. Where? On a post card! Have people always sent post cards? No. Before
post cards, people liked sealed letters.
The idea for the first decorated (装饰) post card came to John P. Charlton in 1861.
He thought a simple card with decorations would be a great way to send a note. Then in

England allowed a divided-back post card. Then people could write their note on the
back left side and put the address on the right. During the early 1900s, the golden age of
post cards, picture post cards became a craze of the world. In 1908, Americans alone

Mr. Right put my paper on my desk. There in big red numbers, circled to draw
attention, was my score, 55!
I lowered my head, and covered the score up quickly. A 55 is not something that
you wanted your classmates to see. “The scores were not very good, none of you

A 55. That’s me!
Suddenly my sad look didn’t look so bad. I had the highest score. I felt a lot better.

what you do!” my father firmly said.

Every time you turn on the television or take a ride in a car, you could be adding to a
problem called acid rain(酸雨). In this article, you’ll learn how acid rain is created, and
how it affects us, and more importantly, what we all can do to prevent it.
How is acid rain created?
When people use fuels(燃料), such as coal and gasoline, poisonous gases are given off.
When these gases mix with rain, acid rain forms. Many power stations burn fuels in

with these gases, harmful things called acids form. This is acid rain.
How does acid rain affect us?
Acid rain damages everything that it touches. It poisons our rivers, ponds, lakes, and
oceans along with all the life in them. It pollutes our soil and crops, harms trees, and can
even kill fish and plants. Acid rain also eats away at buildings.
How can we prevent acid rain?
We need to cut down on the pollution that gets into our air. Turn off lights, televisions,
and other electrical appliances if you are not using them. Walk or take a bike whenever
possible. I f you are traveling a long distance, take a bus or train to save fuel.
As research shows, acid rain harms our environment. But people everywhere can take

When you cough or sneeze, please turn your head away from others and cover your
mouth with the full part of your hand. Afterwards, you should say, “Excuse me.” This is a
rule I set for my students.
It is so simple, but many kids have never been told to do this. In fact, I notice adults
cough and sneeze in public without putting a hand over the mouth. I hate traveling by
subway（地铁）in New York during cold and flu season, because it is certain that
someone is going to stand right behind me and cough or sneeze on my neck.
One important thing I point out to the kids is that after they sneeze or cough on their
hand, they should wash their hands as soon as possible. Otherwise, they will be passing
those germs(病菌)along to everything and everyone they touch.
In order to help the kids remember this rule, I tell them about an old story. It says
that when you sneeze, evil spirits jump into your body. If you don’t cover your mouth,
the spirits will enter, but if you cover your mouth, you will keep them out. We say “God
bless you” when some sneezes, and in Germany you should say “Gesundheit.” That
means “Good health to you.” Both expressions are said just in case you didn’t cover your
mouth in time and the spirits were able to enter your body. The kids love finding out the
origins(起源) of these expressions and it encourages them to put the advice to use more

Of course you don’t want to be sick in your vacation. So what can you do while
traveling? There are three things you should remember: relax, sleep and eat well.
A vacation is a time for relaxing, but very often it is not. Think about what you do
when you are a tourist. There are so many places to visit: shop, parks, churches and
temples ( 寺庙). You may spend most of the days walking around these places. This can
be very tiring. Do not ask your body to do too much. A tired body means a weak body. A
weak body gets dick easily. So sit down for a few hours in a nice place. In good weather,
look for a quiet park bench.
Sleep is also important. If you want to stay healthy, you need to get enough sleep.
Your hotel room may be noisy, or the bed may be too hard. Or you may want to stay out
late at night. Then you should plan to sleep for an hour during the day. The extra hour
can make a big difference.
Finally, if you want to stay healthy, you must eat well. That means eating the right
kinds of food. Your boday needs fresh fruit, vegetables, mean, milk and cheese.
So, remember this: if you want to enjoy your vacation, take good care of yourself.
Give your body some rest. Get enough sleep and eat healthy food.
36. You should ____ while traveling.
A. eat well B. walk all the time C. do shopping D. ask your body to do a lot.

I remember the first time I met Alfred after years. He was sitting on a bench in the
park. He looked very sad and cold. He hadn’t got a coat on and it started to rain. Usually,
I don’t like to stop to speak to a stranger who looked like that. His shoes were
well-cleaned and his clothes were quite smart, but he did not have an umbrella with him
and he was getting wet in the rain. I stopped walking and said to him in a nice voice. “
Are you OK?” he looked up, and was surprised to see me. He cried out. “ Are you …” he
couldn’t remember my name. I was also surprised. He was Alfred! “ I’m Tom, Alfred,
what are you doing here?” I asked. He did not explain to me, but caught my hand, and
asked how my life was like. I told him that I was out of job. I suggested that we go
somewhere warm and dry.
So we found a café nearby and continued our conversation. I learned that he
married with two children, and his wife was Sherry. I could not believe my ears. Twenty
years ago his best friend was Linda, and Sherry was his worst enemy! They often had
quarrels ( 争吵) and fights in the play.
Alfred told me that he became a businessman when he graduated from the school

To most of us, school means classes, teachers, schedules,
grades and tests. But for the children at Sudbury Valley
School in Massachusetts, school is very different.
Firstly, there are no lessons. All the children, aged
between 4 and 19, do whatever they want. There are no
teachers, only “staff members”. The idea behind this is that
you do not need to make children learn, because children want to learn anyway. “You do
not need to say to a three-year-old, ‘Go explore your environment.’ You can’t stop
them!”says Daniel Greenberg, a founder of the school. “But if you make children do what
you want all day… they will lose all taste of learning.” At Sudbury Valley School, you will
find children talking, reading, painting, cooking, working on computers, studying
French, playing the piano, climbing trees, or just running around. Two boys spent three
years just fishing!
The other way that Sudbury Valley School is different is that the children can decide
the rules. Every week, there is a school meeting where both children and staff have one
vote (投票)each—even the four-year-olds. They decide the school rules, how to spend
the school money, and even which staff they want and do not want anymore.
When the school first opened in 1968, people said it would never work. But today,
the school has 200 students, and 80% of its students go on to college. Even the two boys
who went fishing all the time have successful careers today. One of them is a musician
and the other is a computer scientist.

Earthworms are very important animals. They help to expose the soil to air when
they are digging tunnels. At the same time, earthworms make the soil rich with their
wastes. Good soil can have as many as as 1,000,000 worms per acre!

There are over 3,000 kinds of earthworms around the world. These animals have a
soft body but no backbones. Some earthworms are brown, and some are red. They can
be a few inches long, and can also be over 22 feet long. The largest earthworms live in
South Africa and Australia.
My body is like a chain of carriages
The earthworm’s body is made up of about 100 segments, like a long chain of
carriages. Its mouth is on the first segment and the anus is on the last. But the worm
doesn’t breathe with its mouth. It breathes with its skin, and the skin need to be wet. In
the front part of the worm, there are the brain and hearts. The earthworm has five pairs
of hearts! The rest of the inside of the worm is filled with the intestines. It digests its
food with these many intestines. In the middle of the animal, there are big segments. The
worm has eggs and gives birth to baby worms with that part.
Soil is my food!
Earthworms eat soil and the organic material in it, for example, the bugs’ body
parts. Live plants are never their food, and the worms live friendly with their plant
neighbours. Earthworms don’t have eyes, then how can they“see”their food? The
animal’s mouth is covered by a thin piece. This part helps the earthworm sense light and
shakes as a guidance. The worms have no legs, so how can they move and taste different
soils? There are many small hairs on their bodies. With the help of these hairs, the
animals have a big meal

Happiness is for everyone. You don’t need to care about those people who have
beautiful houses with large gardens and swimming pools or those who have nice cars
and a lot of money and so on. Why? Because those who have big houses may often feel
lonely and those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads at their free
In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are
in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons,
your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get
success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do something wrong,
people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to
others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice them, you can
see that happiness is always around you.
Happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are
poor, you can also say you are very happy, because you have something else that can’t be
bought with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very
happy, because you have more
chances to challenge （挑战）yourself. So you cannot always say you are poor and you
have bad luck. As the saying goes, life is like a revolving (旋转) door. When it closes, it
also opens. If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy and lucky person.
61. Happiness is for______.
A. those who have large and beautiful houses B. those who have cars
C. those who have a lot of money D. all people

A. When you get success, your friends will be very proud of you.
B. You can get help from others when you make mistakes.
C. You can still be a happy person even if you have little money.
D. All the above.
64. Why do we say “Happiness is not the same as money”? Because______.
A. money always brings happiness B. money doesn’t always bring
C. everything can be bought with money D. only rich people have happiness

When I was a girl of 10, I joined the school cross-country team and practiced twice a
week, on the 1,8-km course I'd never really run before and I thought the course would
be easy. It was a real shock I ran out of breathe(喘气)within the first few minutes. I
never realized how tiring running could be but I didn’t t think about give up.
Over time, I did get a little bit faster. However, I was really slow. In races, I would
finish close to last. I'd always have to stop more than once, especially in the longer races,

feelings. If we are feeling great, we may give our body signals(信号). If we look at

You probably know you should say” please” and “thank you ” at restaurants. You
probably know the rules of a library. You know you should respect and be nice to your
classmates. But do you have music manners?
Keep It Down! You have to notice the volume of your music. You should not play your
music so loud that everyone around you can hear it. Some people might even get angry.
Usually, when you play the music loud on an MP3 player, other people can’t hear the
words of the song. They just hear a loud sound. Not one wants to listen to this. Very loud
music can also be bad for your cars, so even if you are alone when listening to our MP3
player, you shouldn’t have it turned up too high.
Take Them off! You need to know when to turn your MP3 player off and put it away.
Libraries and schools don’t allow MP3 players. There are other places, like museums,
that don’t have rules,
but is would be rude to have your MP3 player on. Sometimes, it just doesn’t make sense
to listen your MP3 player at event. Why would you listen to music at a play, a movie or a
sporting event? your would miss what is going on and others would wonder why you
Take One Out! Once is a while it’s okay just to take out one earphone and not other.
Imagine you are listening your MP3 player when someone asks you the way. It would
not be rude to take out one earphone, tell him the way, and put back the earphone and

But to a London taxi driver, driving is not an easy job. A taxi driver needs to have
not only good driving skills but also a good knowledge of the city of London, from the

times he has to stay longer and try to make more runs. He said, “That’s the worst thing
about working for yourself. If you don’t make money, no one is going to give it to you. ”
London taxi drivers not only “take” but also “give”. Every summer hundreds of poor
children from London go for a day at the sea ― by taxi! There rides are paid by the taxi
drivers. At the sea, they are met by the mayor (市长) , and a lunch party is also held for

Close contacts between Japan and the rest of the world were created in the
twentieth century. In the last forty years, business contacts between Japan and the West
have become very important. Many foreign companies now have offices in Japan and
Japanese businessmen do business around the world. Differences between Japanese and
Western ways of doing business, however, often bewilder foreign businessmen and
make doing business in Japan difficult for foreigners.
The American businessman, for example, wants to start talking business
immediately. He does not want to wait. The Japanese businessman, on the other hand,
likes to arrive at decisions after giving them serious thought. Another thing foreign
businessmen have difficulty in understanding is when a Japanese means “Yes” or “No”.
This is because of cultural differences between Japanese and Western society(社会),
Which make it difficult for a Japanese to say “No” directly.
In the USA, it is easy to say “No” to something one does not want to do. But in Japan,
it is very difficult to say “No”. To refuse an invitation or a request(请求) with “No” is felt
to be impolite. It is thought to be selfish and unfriendly. So instead of saying “No”
directly, the Japanese have developed many ways to avoid(避免) saying “No”. These can
help them avoid hurting other people’s feelings. However, this often makes their ways of
doing business rather difficult for foreigners to understand and follow.
37. What often makes foreigners feel difficult to do business in Japan?
A. Their different ways of doing business.
B. Their different lifestyles.
C. The fact that the Japanese never say “No”.
D. The fact that the Japanese are slow to take action.
38. Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the underlined expression
“bewilder foreign businessmen” in Paragraph One?
A. cause foreign businessmen to change their minds.
B. give a feeling of surprise to foreign businessmen.
C. attract foreign businessmen’s attention.
D. make foreign businessmen think wrongly.
39. What fact does the passage lead you to believe?
A. American businessmen do things more slowly than Japanese ones.
B. American businessmen like to say “Yes” and “No”.
C. Americans usually say what they are thinking.
D. Americans do not say what they think or feel clearly.
40. From the passage we can infer(推断) that __________.
A. Japanese businessmen are good at business
B. foreign businessmen should try to know Japanese ways of doing business
C. foreign businessmen must be more polite
D. you must learn from Japanese businessmen if you want to succeed
