Please see attached schedule for MCAS dates for grades 3,4,and 5.
Parent placement forms for next year will be coming home on April 1st for grades K-4. Please watch
backpacks for them.
Please mark your calenders for Thursday, April 12, 2012 for our Demonstration Night. Grades K-2 at
5PM and grades 3-5 at 6PM.
At our February PTO meeting we discussed building issues with Mayor Kirk, Mike Hale, Director of Public Works,
and James Hafey, Facilities Director. Over February vacation the walls and the upper wall radiators were cleaned
and painted, dumpsters were moved a bit farther from the lunchroom side of the building, and pest control has
set traps around the building. We are still awaiting air quality tests and hope for more cleaning, pest control
and updates to classroom issues and school bathrooms, as well as outdoor field areas. Thank you to all that
attended that meeting. It was a huge success thanks to your concern for our children, their safety and their

Please join us for our March PTO meeting. We will be discussing library, enrichment, fundraising, fun stuff for
our kids and more! Bring your ideas or just your listening ears. Babysitting will be provided in the gym. Have
your child/children bring an activity, homework, a book or a ball to keep them busy.
Please CONTINUE to send in your Box Tops for Education! We truly appreciate all of you that take the miniscule
amount of time to save these and send to school. It is worth the quick cut and paste. DON’T THROW AWAY BOX TOPS.

Thank you to all that purchased Kid Stuff Coupon Books to support our children. Anyone that ordered more than
the one book that was sent home in the backpacks, should have received their remaining purchased books by now.

The February Reading Contest has come to a close. All Reading Coupons needed to be returned by Thursday, March
1st to be counted towards the winning tallies. Thank you to Sherri Lewis for being the motivation behind this
contest and for inpsiring our students to read more! Also, look forward to another book swap in March! Dates to
be provided soon! Again, we have an awesome library team. Thank you!
This Friday, March 2nd students in grades K through 2 will meet and learn about the life of Abe Lincoln, while
students in grades 3 through 5 will be introduced to the times and travels of Amelia Earhart. These programs are

After School Crafts Club
Parent, Laura Haight, is hosting one of our next after school programs! She is inviting students in grades 3
through 5 (maximum of 12 students) to join her to create a mirror and a picture frame using recycleables and
found objects. The program will run on Thursdays, beginning March 8th until March 29th. Cost is $15.00 per
student for the four-week session. Please look for this program flyer in your child’s backpack this week.
Doodle for Google Logo Design Contest
Google (of the Internet) is hosting a logo design contest. Students will be asked to design a logo based on time
travel or a place in history. Parents, Sherri Lewis (artist/cake designer/crafter/float maven) and Steve
Borowick (graphic/web/print designer) have volunteered to host a free afterschool program for students to learn
about logo design and work on their submissions. Please visit doodleforgoogle for more information and look for
the flyer advertising this program in your childs backpack! Winners will receive college scholarship funds and
their school will win funds as well! Win, win, win! Or just have fun!
Second and Third Grade West Parish Food Drive
Our next food drive is in full swing! We are collecting donations of food from the Second and Third Grade
classrooms. The food drive will continute until Friday, March 16th. Remember that Grades 4 and 5 donated over 600
pounds of food before Thanksgiving! Can Grades 2 and 3 top that? The class with the most donations will receive
a gift card from the PTO for classroom supplies! All donations benefit The Open Door.

Thank you Mary Ellen Lepionka, grandmother extraordinaire and dream West Parish librarian, for her excellent
article in the The Gloucester Daily Times regarding West Parish. She highlighted many of the wonderful programs
that are happening at our school currently and let the public know what a wonderful and enriching educational
home our school is. Thank you for your time and compassion for our school and students and all your hard work.
The Fifth Grade Play
The Fifth Grade Play, “A Thousand Channels and Still Nothing On!” will be presented on Thursday March 15th for
public seating. The show will begin at 7pm, so please bring your donation and a smile to witness the many
talents of our graduating class!
West Parish Book Fair
Our second Book Fair will take place from Wednesday, March 14th until Friday, March 16th. Please send in a check
made out to West Parish PTO with amount not to exceed in the memo line, or cash of course. Parents are welcome
to visit the front lobby of school and purchase books at any time during the three day book fair and especially
before and after the Fifth Grade Play on Thursday, March 15th! Thank you to all our wonderful library volunteers
for making these book fairs such a success for both our children and in raising funds for new library books!
Fifth Grade Calendar Raffle
Fifth Grade students are raising money to support their graduation festivities, including yearbooks, t-shirts,
Nature’s Classroom (overnight camp for all Fifth graders in the district), and other events. They are currently
selling for $10.00 each, a raffle calendar. If you purchase a calendar your name will be entered three times for
each daily drawing. Raffle drawing prizes include massages, restaurant gift certificates, gym memberships, and
more. If you would like to purchase a calendar but do not know a Fifth grader, please contact Pam Taormina at
West Parish Clean-up/Improvement Day
Please join us on Saturday, April 28th from 9:00 to 11:00 am to clean up the grounds of West Parish, prune
bushes, sweep walkways, paint doors, and more! If we all give our school an hour or two, West Parish will look

Gloucester Heritage Maritime Center
Students in Grades 3, 4 and 5 will study our oceans, water, tidepools, and the more at or with the Gloucester
Maritime Heritage Center the week of March 12th. Thank you to the Gloucester Education Foundation (GEF) for
sponsoring these enriching and exciting programs.
Thank you to Kelly Allen for hosting “Sewing for Beginners” and to Sherri Lewis for hosting “Paper Takes
Flight.” You are great parents for taking time out of your busy schedules for our community. The students loved
