The Assistive Devices team, part of Medical Devices Technology group of IRL is developing
virtual reality rehabilitation systems, especially for people who have suffered a stroke. These
systems are being commercialised through a private NZ company Im-Able Ltd and have been
shown to supply increased benefit to patients in terms of improved upper limb function. Our long
term strategy is to develop and provide tools that allow the stroke survivor to carry out their own
rehabilitation in an independent manner at home. We believe that the current medical model for
rehabilitation of elderly is unsustainable into the future. However, the financial cost benefit of
supplying rehabilitation in a home care environment is not known and the lack of opportunity for
elderly people to return to paid employment as a result of rehabilitation reduces the financial
incentive for supplying rehabilitation services to that population. This project will investigate the
cost of supplying rehabilitation to stroke survivors and compare that to the value to society of a
person gaining increased independence in their daily living. It is expected that the research will be
conducted in a literature based manner. The team includes human movement scientist,
physiotherapist and engineer involved in this technology development.
If the project involves work away from the University campus (e.g., at fieldwork sites) please detail all locations.
Project will be based at IRL offices, Christchurch
If the student be required to work outside of normal university hours (8am-6pm) please provide details
Benefits student will gain from involvement in the project (up to 100 words)
Describe the research experience and skills that the student will acquire through involvement in this research project
(box will expand as you type).
The student will gain experience in market analysis for medical application that will be utilised in ongoing
research. The team is small but focussed on excellence with outputs of a world leading product that is
currently being commercialised through Im-Able www.im-able.com There is an emphasis on the practicality
and immediacy of use of this system in a real world clinical situation, but this project will be carried out in a
supportive research environment. The team has a diverse range of expertise so the skills of the student in
interactions with multi-disciplinary team will be developed.
