Time Warner president tackles Austin's growth

Time Warner Cable has named Kathy Brabson, a 28-year company veteran, president of
its Central Texas division.
Brabson, who started out as a customer service representative fresh out of high school in
1979, will lead a team of more than 1,700 employees who deliver cable television,
Internet and telephone service to roughly 440,000 households in Austin and Waco.
She replaces Tom Kinney, who had led the division since 2001 and was recently named
Time Warner Cable's corporate vice president of customer care.
Brabson, who has been on the job just over three weeks, most recently was vice president
and general manager of Time Warner Cable's Myrtle Beach, S.C., cable system.
Time Warner Cable is the country's second-largest cable company with 13.4 million
subscribers in 33 states.
The company was recently spun off from media giant Time Warner Inc., and this month
reported first-quarter profits of $276 million, up $39 million from a year ago.
Brabson wouldn't say how much of that came from the Central Texas division, not
wanting to tip off competitors. She did say she's thrilled to be taking charge of the
division, which has been among Time Warner Cable's most vibrant.
Because of its highly tech-savvy population, Austin frequently is a test market for new
products and services. It's also one of the fastest-growing, she says.
"We could easily build 1,000 miles of new [lines] a year," Brabson says.
Brabson says the Central Texas division will sharpen its focus on providing excellent
customer service to set it apart.
Among the changes she is planning is improving Internet-based customer service --
which could include allowing subscribers to schedule their own installation and repair
work. She says she'll also work on making it more convenient for customers to get cable
service installed. Currently when customers schedule a cable hookup, the company gives
them a four-hour window of time during which to expect the installer to arrive.
"One of my goals is to get to a two-hour window," Brabson says.
