            Newspaper Project

            You have been hired by the Cincinnati Times to write a newspaper about the events
            that Freak the Mighty encountered in the novel we just completed. Look below for
            your requirements.

     1. Main News Story - this is expository writing– do not give your opinion – write a news
        story about one of the events in the book. Use facts that were given in the novel.
             Has an eye-catching title
             Include the WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY AND HOW.
             Begins in an interesting way (quote, fact, startling statement, question, etc.)
             Accurate information

     2. AMBER ALERT OR WANTED AD – someone from the book is missing! Who is it? -
        technical writing
            Has full name of person who is missing
            Accurate and complete information. (Full name of person, where and when was
               this person last seen, what was he/she wearing, reward??)

     3. Advertisement – what item or service from this novel could you sell? – Persuasive
        writing. Use a persuasive technique discussed in class!
             Complete name of item or service
             Use a persuasive technique we discussed in class (bandwagon, glittering
                generalities, etc.)
             Cost – be realistic
             How do I get one? Phone number? Website? Address?
             Warranty? Guarantee?
     4. Obituary – expository/technical writing. Someone has died and you are responsible
        for writing their obituary.
             Include name, age, manner of death, where and when they died. Include where
                the funeral will be held at. List at least three specific characteristics about this
                person.
             Respectful tone.
     5. Letter to the Editor – persuasive/technical writing –
             Write a letter to the editor persuading him or her to take your stance on a
                specific issue in the book
             Must be in letter form (greeting, body, closing)
             Give TWO valid reasons for your opinion (you need support to convince your
                audience why you feel the way you do)

6.      Fillers: You can fill your newspaper with other items as well. Some ideas are: classified
                 ads (want ads)
