Studying part-time for a

Postgraduate Qualification

Flexible study opportunities leading to postgraduate qualifications

There are many good reasons for embarking on a further period of study. Expanding your knowledge and skills must be one of the surest ways of improving your personal prospects. Increasingly, employers are looking for that extra qualification and skills when appointing or promoting staff. Employees should be keen to maintain and enhance their level of knowledge and skills throughout their careers. Studying on a part-time basis often represents a cost efficient and practical way of gaining a qualification or additional skills. Continuing with employment enables the option of sponsorship from an employer, or if this is unavailable, the opportunity to finance studies from regular income. Part-time students benefit from the same high standard of teaching and learning as those opting for full-time programmes, and have access to the comprehensive facilities offered by Oxford Brookes University including 24 hour computing, lecture and seminar rooms and the library, as well as the University Virtual Library.

explores alternative approaches to data collection and analysis. It also explores critical issues in research and themes associated with the conduct of successful research. The module concludes in the delivery of a 20,000-word dissertation and a reflective practice essay. There are three assessment points. The first involves the submission of a research proposal and is assessed as either pass or fail. The second involves the submission of a reflective practice essay that draws upon the experience of learning within the workshop programme. The third involves submitting the dissertation itself. Teaching and learning Students are formed into peer-assisted learning groups within which you undertake tasks and reading in preparation for each workshop. Each group is assigned a personal tutor. Students and tutors are supported by WebCT, a software package giving access to the full power of online learning experience through a networked learning environment. This enables you to remain in contact with your peers and your tutors whilst exchanging views, experiences and insights in relation to the topic under review. Each of you is assigned an experienced supervisor who typically has specialist knowledge of the subject or disciplinary area chosen and with whom you are required to agree the research objectives. You are expected to meet with your supervisor in accordance with your project plan. The plan is developed and agreed jointly by you and the supervisor at the outset of the process. Normally, you will also negotiate a set of outcomes that will add value to the organisation(s) with which you choose to undertake the work. The dissertation will be assessed against organisational, sectoral or professional significance and contribution. We appreciate that it is not possible for everyone who would like to study for the Oxford Brookes MBA to do so on a full-time basis. The big advantage of the Executive MBA is that you can continue in your existing employment whilst studying for a qualification through attendance at Saturday/Sunday workshops, conveniently delivered at the Wheatley Campus. This gives the additional benefit of being able to continuously put theory into practice. The intensive study blocks also give some of the benefits of full-time study in terms of discussing issues with fellow students. We will involve you in a dynamic management development programme, which will address your current and future management needs. We aim to recruit a diverse cohort of students with professional or managerial backgrounds within the public or private sector. The MBA is designed to equip you to carry out hard analysis and evaluation of a range of business and management situations. In addition, the course prepares you for some of the softer implementation issues, such as leadership and the skill of influencing others, which can make the difference between success and failure.
