									Double Gold to Rory Chesser and Thomas Scanlon
at the Munster Track and Field Championships.
The Munster Junior and U/23’s Track and Field Championships were held in very windy
conditions at Cork Institute of Technology Track in Cork and Clare athletes were very much to
the fore with gold going to Rory Chesser Ennis Track Club in the Junior Men’s 3000 metres and
his Clubmate Thomas Scanlon Ennis Track Club produced a fine run when taking the U/23’s
Men’s 3000metres.

The Junior Men’s 800 metres was the race of the day with all the big names on the starting line
and this was fought at a furious pace with David McCarthy West Waterford setting out a
blistering pace from the gun and he was looking for a very fast time to qualify for the Youth
Olympics and he achieved that when he crossed the finishing line in (1min.55.29secs) to take the
gold medal after a mighty battle Brian Markham Ennis Track Club where he captured the silver
medal in (1min.57.45secs) and another Clare athlete Rory Chesser Ennis Track Club finished
fourth.
The Junior Men’s 3000 metres this was dominated by Ennis Track Club athletes with Rory
Chesser, Eoin McCarthy, Paul Walsh, and Seosamh O’Loughlin all battling for major honours
and it was Rory Chesser who dominated this race for the seven and half laps as he crossed the
finishing line with a very good time on very windy conditions with a time of (9mins . 07secs) with
Paul Walsh just edging out Seosamh O’Loughlin with a big finish over the final 300metres to
take the silver medal and fourth place going to Eoin McCarthy.
The Junior men’s High Jump Keith King Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare produced some
outstanding leaps over six rounds to take a silver medal with a leap of (1. 83metres).

The Munster U/23 Track and Field Championships Thomas Scanlon Ennis Track Club and
Arthur Fitzgerald Farranfore fought out a mighty battle in the 3000metres and it was over the
final 800metres that the Clare man powered his way to victory to take the gold medal in (9 mins.
21secs) with the Kerry man having to settle for the silver medal in (9mins. 43secs), and later on
that afternoon Thomas Scanlon Ennis Track Club competed in the 800metres and came away
with a bronze medal with the gold going to Brian Dunne Carrig on Suir.
