BuildDirect – VP, Product Strategy Vancouver is consistently ranked as one the top most liveable cities in the world, according to annual rankings compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit. 1 THE OPPORTUNITY: VP, Product Strategy The VP, Product Strategy is a key executive role in the organization. It is a new position and will be tasked with leading a team to strategically enhance the existing product portfolio with a focus on growth and profitability. The ideal candidate must have both an entrepreneurial spirit and a critical‐ thinking / decision‐making process that is data centric. The online sales potential within the DIY and DIFM sectors is tremendous; the new VP will need to develop merchandising strategies that are consistent with the company’s data intelligence; and meet or exceed financial goals and customer expectations. Reporting directly to the CEO, the VP, Product Strategy will develop and mentor a product strategy team, including several Category Managers. In addition to creating pricing and product strategies, the position will create a culture of continuous improvement for new and existing suppliers through a process of data sharing & interpretation, and information feedback. Primary Responsibilities This position is responsible for: Utilizing metrics to optimize pricing, product strategy, and overall category management; Overseeing the development of product and pricing strategy for all categories; Developing and creating product strategy and category management with the team; Leading forward‐looking product and category planning initiatives; Ensuring product assortment meets the category planning programs; Prioritizing cross‐category initiatives to meet customer expectations while ensuring resource efficiency and effectiveness; Growing, leading and mentoring the Category and Product teams; Remaining up‐to‐date on trends within the online and building materials industries, including competitor analysis and industry leaders; Creating new revenue opportunities by enhancing the product assortment from within the DIY and DIFM sectors; BuildDirect – VP, Product Strategy Sourcing new suppliers and actively managing relationships with current suppliers; Overseeing and accountable for overall profitability as well as creating and managing departmental budgets; Building business cases based on data‐driven activity to drive new product offerings and enhance supplier relationships; Negotiating and sourcing new suppliers contracts and agreements on behalf of the company; and Maintaining interdepartmental communications (i.e. Marketing, Supply Chain, Finance, IT and Sales). 2 THE PERSON: Education and Qualifications The ideal candidate for the VP position will be a business leader with specific knowledge in large scale retail environments. Key qualifications for consideration will include: Post secondary education with a specialization in e‐commerce / business or a related field; At least 15 years experience in senior merchandising/retail environments, involving merchandising, category management, marketing, operations, financial management and leadership; Progressive career trajectory in senior leadership roles within a major retail or consumer goods company; Previous P&L responsibility for a significant organization or business unit; Proven success in creating new supplier relationships and fostering beneficial ongoing relationships; Solid understanding of how to launch new categories in a multi‐category environment; Experience managing a large number of SKUs; Expert level experience in product management, pricing, promotion and development; Data driven: extensive experience and understanding of analytics to drive product and pricing strategy; Solid history of leading a large team through fast‐paced, high‐growth, rapidly evolving environments; Excellent people management skills including proven hiring, mentoring, change management, engaging and developing a diverse team; Comfortable and capable in an entrepreneurial work environment; and Advanced written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders.
