BASIC FUNCTION:
To provide American Sign Language interpreting for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in
the academic setting and university functions.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide interpretation of class instruction and university activities with American Sign
Language for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Maintain compliance with federal and state mandates regarding accommodation of students
with disabilities.
Provide training for faculty, staff and students regarding the utilization of American Sign
Language interpreters within the academic setting.
Assist with translation of printed information to alternative formats such as reading books onto
tape and converting printed information to Braille via software programs. Assist with real-time
captioning and transcription services.
Assist with office coordination, scheduling interpreters and development of office services
information. Provide project and task support to the department, division and the university
regarding disability services.
Perform related duties as assigned.
REPORTS TO:
Designated Supervisor
LEADERSHIP AND SUPERVISION:
Limited responsibility for supervision. May supervise students and/or provide functional
guidance of support staff or other employees who work on a project or assignment on a
temporary or intermittent basis throughout the year.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
Associate’s degree.
A minimum 2-3 years American Sign Language interpreting experience at the postsecondary
education level.
Preferences:
Bachelor’s degree in Interpreting, Vocational Rehabilitation, Special Education, or related field.
Certificate of Interpretation and/or Certificate of Transliteration from the Registry of Interpreters
for the Deaf (RID), and/or certification through the National Association of the Deaf (NAD)
Level IV or V.
Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of personal computer applications
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Excellent interpersonal skills
Knowledge and understanding of Deaf Culture and American Sign Language
Student advising and interviewing skills
Ability to work hours that vary each semester, including the possibility of evening and
weekend hours
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force
frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Typically requires sitting,
walking, standing, bending, keying, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Incumbent may be required to travel from building to building frequently and off campus
occasionally.
