COMMUNICABLE DISEASES CONTROL DIRECTIVE
The Public Health Nurses endeavor to prevent disease and promote health for all residents by
providing Communicable Disease follow-up according to established protocol. The PHN works under
the supervision of the Medical Director and the Director or Nursing. Policy and procedure for the
investigation and reporting of typically occurring communicable diseases is contained within the
Communicable Disease Manual. This manual will provide direction for Communicable Disease
investigation and be supplemented by the orders of the Medical Director in case of unusual disease
occurance or an epidemic outbreak. These policies and procedures will be reviewed and updated
periodically by the Director of Nursing, in consultation with the Medical Director.
This manual does not contain follow-up procedures and reporting requirements for Tuberculosis,
Venereal Diseases and HIV. Separate Policy and Procedures manuals and directives for treatment
have been developed and are maintained for these diseases.
