of time. You should spend only half your time (90) minutes on this prat of the morning
exam. You do not have time to write long essays about each term. These are short answer

Part B. Answer one (1) of the following questions. NOTE: You are advised to begin by
outlining your answer before writing. If you run out of time and fail to complete your
essay, the outline will be taken into account.


1. Discuss two different arguments about the relation between religion and
civic life. FOR EACH ARGUMENT:
   a) Explain the main concept(s) and logic that drive the argument. What if
   anything does the argument say about changes in religion or in civic life?
   b) Identify at least one study or body of empirical evidence that has been
   used to support the argument.
   c) What are the strengths or weaknesses in each study/body of evidence as
   support for the argument.


2. Alexis de Tocqueville's argument about religion's influence on social life
has been highly influential in social science. Write an essay that
discusses this argument and its empirical implications.
       a) What is Tocqueville's argument about religion in the US?
       b) Discuss two studies that draw on Tocqueville's argument about religion,
       implicitly if not explicitly. Use those two studies to suggest both
       insights and blindspots or limitations in Tocqueville's argument.
