Essay 1: Family/Gender
Choose one of the following options and write an insightful, thought-provoking essay. First and second person are
not allowed. This is informal writing, and this is a formal writing class. Your paper should incorporate at least one
of the essays discussed in class for this unit. Be sure to have at least five sources, use MLA format, and have a
works cited page. Four of your sources must come from outside the book. Your essay is to be more than 1400
words. A satisfactory essay is a complete essay. Therefore, unless you meet the minimum requirement on words
you will not receive higher than a D no matter how good the rest of the essay is. The essay will be evaluated using
the scoring guide you already have that uses UMKC standards. The essay is due at 7am on the due date through
turnitin. Essays submitted after 7am will be counted as late and get a full letter grade deduction! Your essay must
be submitted as a .doc, .docx, or .rtf file! If you don’t know how to convert files, come ask!
Family/Gender Essay Options
Option 1: Make an argument about the impact family has on society in modern America
Option 2: Choose one or more changes family structure has gone through in the past decades and argue which has
the greatest impact on modern American society
Option 3: Make an argument as to which parental role is most important in the family structure
Option 4: Several of the essays in this unit revolve around changing female and male roles. Explore the changes in

Option 7: Anything else you choose, but it must be approved by me prior to writing the essay.
