Target students: 2st year, 3rd year and 5th Year
Rationale:
The function of the endocrine system is to coordinate and integrate cellular activity within the
whole body by regulating cellular and organ function throughout life and maintaining
homeostasis. Homeostasis, or the maintenance of a constant internal environment, is critical to
ensuring appropriate cellular function. By updating, designing and remodeling the curriculum it
has been kept in mind that the aging and disease states are incorporated in this module so that
normal physiological changes are taught with reference to common disease processes occurring in
our community.
Terminal Objective:
Medical graduate after completion of 5 years training program should be able to recognize the
clinical presentations of common endocrinological and metabolic disorders. They should be able
to diagnose these disorders on the basis of history, examination and investigations. They should
be well versed with the basic principles of management and prevention of these diseases. Our
medical graduate should be confident enough in counseling and assessing the prognosis of
common endocrinological diseases.
Sub module 01: (This will be the foundation stage at which students will gain clinically orientated basic knowledge of any
system’s anatomy, physiology and biochemistry)
Enabling Objectives of sub- module 01 of Endocrinology:
Week 1
   1 Define endocrine, neurocrine, autocrine & paracrine effect giving an example of each
   2 Overview of all endocrine glands / Describe the development, gross and microscopic features and
       List the endocrine glands in the body with their respective hormones
   3 Classify the hormones on the basis of biochemical structure and functions
   4 Explain the general mechanisms of action of hormones
   5 Describe hypothalamic-pituitary end organ axis
   6 Describe the development, structure, secretions, mode of action, functions, anomalies and
       common related disorders of hypothalamus and pituitary.
   7 Given a set of laboratory data, differentiate between hypo and hyper secretion of hypothalamus
       and pituitary.
Week 2
   8 Describe the development, structure, secretions, mode of action, functions, anomalies and
       common related disorders of thyroid and parathyroid Gland
   9 Given a set of laboratory data, differentiate between hypo and hyper secretion of Thyroid and
       parathyroid gland
   10 Discuss the epidemiology and consequences of iodine deficiency
   11 Describe the salient features of iodine control program in Pakistan
Week 3
     12 Describe the development, structure, secretions, mode of action, functions, anomalies and
        common related disorders of pancreas.
     13 Given a set of laboratory data, differentiate between hypo and hyper secretion of Pancreas
     14 Describe the epidemiology of diabetes mellitus in terms of global perspectives in Pakistan
     15 Describe the levels of prevention of diabetes mellitus and its control at primary care level
     16 Describe integration of different hormones in growth, metabolism and maintenance of blood sugar
        level
Week 4
     17 Describe the development, structure, secretions, mode of action, functions, anomalies and
        common related disorders of adrenal gland.
     18 Given a set of laboratory data, differentiate between hypo and hyper secretion of Adrenal cortex
