Guidance Notes
The award of Additional Increments and Contribution Points will be based on ’sustained excellence’.

Following the discussion of role and contribution at PDR, applicants will need to provide evidence of
exceptional contribution of high quality and value, to local areas and/or the wider University which
clearly exceeds the normal expectations of the role, but is within the expectations of the appropriate
grade.

Where Line Managers believe that there is a case for the award of an Additional Increment or
Contribution Point, they are able to complete the application in full and submit this for consideration
by the Professional Services Review Panel.

Members of Professional Services staff have the right to apply personally for consideration for
progression. Where this is not supported by the Line Manager the individual is still able to make a
personal application but it should be noted that, in such instances, the Line Manager will still be
required to verify the evidence set out to support the application and give their managerial
assessment of the case.

Line Managers are required to confirm the quality and value of the contribution, in the context of
local and/institutional plans and objectives. This managerial verification and assessment will be
shared with the applicant prior to the submission of the case.

The Professional Services Review Panel will be looking for evidence of sustained excellence in the
context of your role and in terms of one or more of the following:

NB. It is NOT necessary to provide evidence against all of the headings; evidence can, however, be
submitted against more than one but should not re-state the same example.

 Exceptional service provision to the School/Faculty/Service and/or the wider University

 Exceptional customer service provision to internal or external University stakeholders

 Delivery of agreed longer term objectives to an exceptionally high standard, that impact
positively on the School/Faculty/Service and/or the wider University

 Delivery of outputs or activities at a higher level on a sustained basis, where this is not part of
the substantive role and/or the role does not warrant regrading

 Exceptional achievements which have resulted in an enhanced level of sustained contribution
  within the existing grade

 Development of the role, in collaboration with the line-manager (and/or others) and in the
context of strategic and operational requirements, so that it has an enhanced impact on the
  School/Faculty/Service and/or the wider University

Applicants should also note that the award of Additional Increments and Contribution Points is
subject to determination by the Review Panel and is not automatic.
