My social work career spans over 30 years, within a wide variety of social work settings,
including the Probation Service, adoption, psychiatric social work – (becoming an
Approved Social Worker in 1983) - family therapy and child protection. Over the years,
my role has varied and included Consultant/Trainer and ‘expert witness’ in the Courts.

My experience in the Probation Service and as a psychiatric social worker with acute and
chronic patients created an embryonic interest for me in preventative therapeutic
interventions for children and young people. It also posed many questions, which were
at that time unanswerable, about the impact of early childhood trauma.

In 1989 after four years spent in a specialist child protection unit dealing with child
physical and sexual abuse, I left the Local Authority to concentrate on furthering my
therapeutic skills and joined an independent agency in Shropshire. There, I began to
develop an expertise in therapeutic work with traumatized and abused children and
qualified as a play therapist as this metaphorical mode of working can reach young
children, without re- traumatizing those with painful experiences to assimilate.

In 1995, I launched a Voluntary Fostering Agency for this agency to provide placements
for children leaving their residential care provision. Over time, this became a very
successful placing agency with high levels of expertise in supporting traumatised and
abused children in foster care. I left my post as Director of this Agency in 2004 and
moved to a department dealing with Practice, Research and Development.

In November 2009 I began my own Consultancy and, in addition to providing training to
Local Authorities and Child Care Agencies, I continue to work as Chair of Recovery
Assessments for children living within a therapeutic residential provision. I regularly
provide training for residential care workers and have written and delivered lectures at
Foundation Degree level at Glyndwr University and also at Masters Degree level at
Liverpool Hope University on their Therapeutic Child Care course. I also provided clinical
supervision to a number of play therapy students on this course.

I offer regular supervision to a number of trained therapists and students and whenever
the opportunity arises, work periodically as therapist and consultant to children in foster
and adoptive care.

My main interest remains in researching and understanding the impact of childhood
trauma and I have completed the first year of a Master of Science Degree in
Psychological Trauma at Chester University.
